Philanthropic Capital Advances Responsible Growth, Economic and Community Development
Bank of America giving $300,000 in grants to local nonprofits
“Advancing economic and community development initiatives strengthens the vibrancy of Phoenix where people want to live, work and do business, and is part of our approach to responsible growth,” said Benito Almanza, president at Bank of America. “By deploying philanthropic capital to nonprofits that are helping to ensure all neighborhoods and households be part of the exciting economic growth that is occurring across the Valley, we can work towards long-term and sustainable economic success.”
Among the nonprofits receiving grants is Phoenix Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), which will use the funding for comprehensive place-based revitalization projects that makes housing more accessible and inclusive in downtown, along parts of the light rail corridor and on a regional scale.
“Programs, like LISC, that ensure working families, low-income households and small businesses at risk of displacement can continue to have opportunities as downtown Phoenix and other economic corridors continue expanding,” said Terry Benelli, Phoenix LISC Executive Director. “Since its inception in 1992, LISC Phoenix has worked with grassroots organizations to address community problems in low-income neighborhoods.”

PHOENIX – "A Valley man who was arrested last year filed a civil lawsuit for brutality against the Mesa Police Department, alleging he was viciously beaten for no reason and choked until he lost consciousness.
Christian Ivan Topete was arrested in October 2017 and charged with two counts of aggravated assault on an officer and one count each of resisting arrest, assault, criminal damage and unlawful imprisonment. According to the lawsuit, which was filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona on Tuesday, police went to Topete’s apartment after a neighbor reported hearing an argument. . . The suit said Topete and Karina Lopez had been arguing about their son, but there was no physical altercation or complaint by Lopez.
The police booking report, however, said Topete was seen hitting Lopez in the face, and she said she feared for her safety.
It also said Topete failed to obey commands and tried to pull away, which led to the physical altercation. The report also indicated that he was under the influence of either alcohol or drugs.
“In the course of the incident, officers made contact with Christian Topete. While attempting to detain him, a use-of-force encounter occurred,” Mesa Police Detective Nik Rasheta said in a statement.

The current ongoing revelations by Republic reporter Craig Harris – outlining how charter school operators are becoming charter school millionaires on the public’s dime – are a darn site more than troubling.
They’re downright outrageous – in large part because they are perfectly legal.
Our leaders, some of whom operate charters schools, have made sure of that.
And the latest outrage is ...
Consider Harris’ latest revelation detailing the way in which Rep. Eddie Farnsworth, owner of Benjamin Franklin Charter Schools, earlier this year helped engineer a plan that would exempt charter schools from certain inconvenient things.
