Images At An Exhibtion: Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum

The current exhibitions in the galleries here in Downtown Mesa @ The Mesa Arts Center are 4-in-1 panorama on the usual well-hung display spaces located on the ground floor.
Last Saturday it was a pleasure to pop-in when there was an opportunity for about an hour to go there while waiting to catch The Neighbood Buzz transit bus to the shopping center at Mesa Riverview. No waiting line - in fact there were people there, so it was refreshing to see a family enjoy the shows.

Mary Meyer
Biophilia
Mary Meyer is an Arizona artist who specializes in mixed media sculpture and installations.
Strongly influenced by a background in traditional stone carving, she uses meditative processes and materials to illustrate our physical kinship with the flora that surrounds us.

In Biophilia, the artist emphasizes the innate human need to find stillness in our daily lives and reconnect with the quiet energy that is our true nature. The installation carries hundreds of hand-built clay seed and leaf abstractions that beckon the viewer to pause, be present and recognize themselves within these humble constructs of nature.

*Mary Meyer is a 2018 proposal winner.

Roberto Benavidez
Medieval Piñata

California sculptor Roberto Benavidez is known for his elaborate, fine art piñatas that play on themes of race, sexuality, art, sin, humor and beauty.
Inspired by art history, Benavidez’s latest work brings to life the fanciful creatures found in Hieronymus Bosch’s iconic painting Garden of Earthly Delights and the whimsical marginalia found in various illuminated medieval manuscripts.

The exhibition features several of Benavidez’s enchanted sculptures, made from papier-mâché, crepe paper and wire.

Flora & Fauna
Botanicals and Animals
in Contemporary Art

Flora and fauna refers to the Western art history classification for plant and animal life, with the exclusion of the human species.
From bacteria to large land and sea mammals, this exhibition celebrates nature and its enduring influence in art.

While many contemporary artists are instinctively drawn to various environments and the creatures that inhabit them, others are inspired by the climate change discourse and global movement to raise awareness about the human impact on the planet

He Gong and Mark Pomilio
A State of Being
A cross-cultural exchange, this exhibition brings together the dynamic black and white works of Chinese artist He Gong and scientifically inspired geometric imagery of Arizona artist Mark Pomilio.
Their friendship was forged several years ago during a residency program in Cheng du, China that He Gong hosted and Pomilio attended.
Even with contrasting methods and subject matter, He Gong and Pomilio’s work capture the complexity of artistic expression and the human experience.

Agenda: Mesa City Council Study Session Thu 09 Jan 2020 @ 07:30 am

Your elected government - and the individuals that voters select to represent their interests, opinions and needs - cannot be effective unless you get informed, active and involved in what City Hall is doing.
They all earn salaries (and generous benefits) to represent and listen to you.
If you don't communicate with the mayor and/or the six district councilmembers, they will listen to other interests.
It's as simple and clear as that can be. . . the rest is up to you.

The Mesa City Council sets policies based on the input and needs of its citizens
The final agenda for tomorrow's Study Session was printed and published online Tue 07 Jan 2020.
Mesa operates under a charter form of government with citizens electing a mayor and six councilmembers to set policy for the City.

MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL

Mesa's councilmembers serve terms of four-years, with three members being elected every two years. The mayor is elected at-large every four years. The mayor and council are elected on a non-partisan basis. The vice mayor is selected by the City Council.
"The Mesa City Council believes that its people, not leaders, are what makes a City great and actively works to encourage citizen participation in the decision-making process. Whether it is through neighborhood meetings, advisory boards and committees, telephone calls and letters, or email, the Mesa City Council sets policies based on the input and needs of its citizens. "

This Story From Outside The Beltway Deserves More Attention

One story from September of last year written for publication by Doug Mataconis almost catches our current dystopian culture  "in a nutshell":
What The Gosar Family Tells Us About Our Broken Political Culture
·
However - reacting sadly helps no one - It just keeps getting nuttier and nuttier and more nutty than ever before in one year after Mataconis - himself a conservative Republican - stated that this episode tells us about the kind of nation we’re turning into. OK. The story might tell us about some take-aways from social media jabber-jabber, media frenzies from media stogies, and flash-mobs showing up at staged public pep-talks and demonstrations, but we're ending up with a close to 50-50 split in a divided nation. . . where the "winners-and-losers" are determined by a small active percent.
_________________________________________________________________________
Six of Congressman Paul Gosar’s nine siblings - three brothers and three sisters - are starring in a political ad for his Democratic opponent:
"It might seem like family dysfunction or a very bad case of sibling rivalry.
Six of nine brothers and sisters of Representative Paul Gosar, Republican of Arizona, publicly endorsed his Democratic opponent in the midterm elections in videos on Friday, in what one of them said was nothing short of a moral imperative.
The siblings were alarmed at what they saw as the congressman’s increasingly extremist views on immigration, health care and white supremacists, . . "
__________________________________________________________________________________
Bernadette Gosar, the siblings’ 85-year-old mother, at herhome in Wyoming said this:
“He’s done a hell of a job for Arizona, and they love him.”

Brother David Gosar has a totally different opinion:
“I’m just hoping either in this election cycle or next, the people get the idea that he’s just not fit for that office and he needs to be removed,” he said.
David Gosar said he’s not surprised his brother is trying to flip the narrative to make his siblings seem like the political radicals.
“He’s capable of saying anything. It’s par for the course,” David Gosar told the Arizona Republic.
“He’s so extreme that his take on this is that we’re so extreme,” he said.
“Here’s a guy who wants to block transgender people from using the bathroom of their gender identification. Here’s a guy who wants to kick DACA kids out of the country, who’s marching with white nationalists in Britain.”
As noted, Gosar responded on Twitter:
"My siblings who chose to film ads against me are all liberal Democrats who hate President Trump. These disgruntled Hillary suppporters are related by blood to me but like leftists everywhere, they put political ideology before family. Stalin would be proud."      #Az04 #MAGA2018
_________________________________________________________________________________
BLOGGER NOTE: It's fairly simple to agree with Doug Mataconis when he states that political disagreements are as old as the country. That's rooted in the very idealistic stated foundations of a democracy and the inherent rights embedded in We The People where everyone is created equal and free to pursue the blessings of life, liberty and happiness.
"While there has been much understandable joking about all of this since the ads came out, it also speaks on some level to the extent to which political dysfunction and hyperpartisanship has infected our culture, our personal relationships, and our family. Political disagreements are as old as the country, of course. "
_________________________________________________________________________________
WHAT'S THE PROBLEM? Politicians have no morals, beholden to "higher interests."
We just can't leave it there - Put a screeching slam on the brakes!
Democracy cannot exist if a nation's leaders are free to simply invent whichever version of reality best suits their own priorities and ambitions. We are seeing it happen:
02 January 2020
Duh! Golly, Gee Whizz! . . .So Many Media Stooges
"At the website PressThink, Jay Rosen had a post-Christmas examination of Meet The Press host Chuck Todd's startling new realization that, golly gee, it turns out that Republicans have been intentionally using his show and others to spread false information.
Yes, Todd just realized that now.
Yes, he is one of the top political "minds" in Washington, which ought to clarify just how boned we all are, as the nation's political press continues to somehow degrade into something even worse and more vapid than the chummy gullibles that brought us the Iraq War. . . "
So what now?

Every approach, however, is a means of accomplishing the same thing: creating a mechanism by which those that spout disinformation to the public can incur damage, and not just rewards. This is not the same as attempting to shame politicians into honest behavior; there is no such thing as political shame.
Stop expecting it; stop presuming it. . . Liars will stop lying in public when the penalties for public lying are consequential enough to outweigh the advantages of broadcasting the lie.
_________________________________________________________________________________
Mataconis's story ends with this paragraph:
"As for Congressman Gosar, it’s unlikely that this ad is going to have much of an impact on his political fortunes. After narrowly winning his seat by defeating Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick in 2010, Gosar was re-elected in 2012 by nearly 60,000 votes, re-elected in 2014 by roughly 80,000 votes, and re-elected yet again in 2016 by roughly 120,000 votes. His district, which stretches from the Phoenix suburbs to the far western and northwestern parts of the Grand Canyon State, is solidly Republican. He’s going to be re-elected in November, but the damage to his family relationships by the behavior on both sides is going to be longer lasting, and that’s unfortunate. What’s even more unfortunate is what this episode tells us about the kind of nation we’re turning into.

A Shock > Urban Transit Is an Energy Hog

Since the advent of Valley Metro Light Rail Service in the Phoenix Metro Area - and the extension through Mesa's Downtown Central Business District in 2014 and the Gilbert Road Terminus in 2019 -  the benefits of urban transit are highly touted and frequently over-hyped.
Here's information and data in today's Featured Story
ACE_EMD_F40PH_Fremont_San_Jose.jpg
"Transit is often touted as a way to save energy. But since 2009 transit has used more energy, per passenger mile, than the average car.
Since 2016, transit has used more than the average of cars and light trucks together."
_________________________________________________________________________
Automobiles and planes are becoming more energy efficient each year. But the annual reports of the National Transit Database reveals that urban transit is moving in the opposite direction, requiring more energy to move each passenger one mile in each of the last four years.
Energy Consumption by Mode
The calculations show that ferries and streetcars use huge amounts of energy per passenger mile, as do automated guideways (i.e., people movers), which aren’t shown in the chart but average even more energy per passenger mile than ferries. Buses and light rail are well above the average automobile.

Ironically, the most energy-efficient transit mode–van pools–is the one that is based on conventional automobiles rather than large buses or railcars.
Commuter and subway/elevated trains (heavy rail) appear to be more efficient, but this is largely because commuter- and heavy-rail numbers are dominated by New York where occupancy rates are high.
> Commuter rail lines in such regions as Dallas-Ft. Worth, Miami, and even Philadelpha use far more than the average amount of energy per passenger mile, as do heavy rail lines in Baltimore, Boston, Los Angeles, and Miami.
> Perhaps the biggest surprise is the DC Metrorail, the nation’s second-most heavily used rail system, which consumes almost 25 percent more energy per passenger mile than the average light truck used in 2017.
