How to think about venture debt
•Mar 13, 2020
Get the full interview here: https://tcrn.ch/3cWX0iM"With the markets in turmoil and fear running rampant through the global economy, you might not think it’s the right moment to start a company.
According to at least one well-known venture capitalist, however, it’s a great time to start up.
TechCrunch recently caught up with former founder and active venture capitalist Jason Lemkin to chat about the world of software-as-service companies, better known as “SaaS.”
Lemkin swung by TC HQ in San Francisco to spend some time with the Equity crew to discuss all things SaaS, markets and startups. Long-time listeners of our Equity podcast will recall that this is not the first or even second time that we’ve had Lemkin on. He was, after all, our first guest, as well as a repeat guest for Episode 100. But as it’s Equity’s third birthday, and the SaaStr conference was just around the corner (now postponed), we had Lemkin back to dig deep into one of our favorite startup categories. "
So let’s get nerdy about SaaS.
Son of Rumplestilstskin | Fractured Fairy Tales| Rocky and Bullwinkle | ...
Turning straw into gold....and, of course there's more to the story

"The lead characters and heroes of the series were Rocket "Rocky" J. Squirrel, a flying squirrel, and his best friend Bullwinkle J. Moose, a dim-witted but good-natured moose.
Both characters lived in the fictional town of Frostbite Falls, Minnesota, which was based on the real life city of International Falls, Minnesota.[25]
The scheming villains in most episodes were the fiendish spies Boris Badenov, a pun on Boris Godunov, and Natasha Fatale, a pun on femme fatale.
Other characters included Fearless Leader, the dictator of the fictitious nation of Pottsylvania and Boris and Natasha's superior, Gidney & Cloyd, little green men from the moon who were armed with scrooch guns; Captain Peter "Wrongway" Peachfuzz, the captain of the S.S. Andalusia; various U.S. government bureaucrats and politicians (such as Senator Fussmussen, a recurring character who opposed admitting Alaska and Hawaii to the union on grounds of his own xenophobia); and the inevitable onlookers, Edgar and Chauncy.

🐿️ Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties", a parody of early 20th century melodrama and silent film serials of the Northern genre. Dudley Do-Right is a Canadian Mountie in constant pursuit of his nemesis, Snidely Whiplash, who sports the standard "villain" attire of black top hat, cape, and large handlebar moustache. This is one of the few Jay Ward cartoons to feature a background music track. As is standard in Ward's cartoons, jokes often have more than one meaning. A standard gag is to introduce characters in an irised close-up with the name of the "actor" displayed in a caption below, a convention seen in some early silent films. However, the comic twist is using the captions to present silly names or subtle puns. Occasionally, even the scenery is introduced in this manner, as when "Dead Man's Gulch" is identified as being portrayed by "Gorgeous Gorge," a reference to professional wrestler Gorgeous George.
🐿️ Fractured Fairy Tales" presented familiar fairy tales and children's stories, but with altered storylines and modernized for humorous effect. This segment was narrated by Edward Everett Horton; June Foray, Bill Scott, Paul Frees, and an uncredited[citation needed] Daws Butler often supplied the voices.[32]
🐿️ Aesop & Son" is similar to "Fractured Fairy Tales", complete with the same theme music, except it deals with fables instead of fairy tales. The typical structure consists of Aesop attempting to teach a lesson to his son using a fable. After hearing the story, the son subverts the fable's moral with a pun. This structure was also suggested by the feature's opening titles, which showed Aesop painstakingly carving his name in marble using a mallet and chisel and then his son, with a jackhammer and raising a cloud of dust, appending "And Son." Aesop was voiced (uncredited)[citation needed] by actor Charlie Ruggles and the son, Junior, was voiced by Daws Butler.
🐿️ Bullwinkle's Corner" features the dimwitted moose attempting to introduce culture into the proceedings by reciting (and acting out) poems and nursery rhymes, inadvertently and humorously butchering them. Poems subjected to this treatment include several by Robert Louis Stevenson ("My Shadow", "The Swing", and "Where Go the Boats"); William Wordsworth's "Daffodils"; "Little Miss Muffet", "Little Jack Horner", and "Wee Willie Winkie"; J. G. Whittier's "Barbara Frietchie"; and "The Queen of Hearts" by Charles Lamb. Simple Simon is performed with Boris as the pie man, but as a variation of the famous Abbott and Costello routine "Who's on First?".
🐿️ Mr. Know-It-All" again features Bullwinkle posing as an authority on any topic. Disaster inevitably ensues."

_________________________________________________________________________BLOGGER NOTE: There's already all too much slow-jammed into the agenda, so why add one more to the heap?
An easy hunch: The more items on one meeting's agenda that city officials throw all together in a single public meeting, the less attention any one item is likely to get
Furthermore, at last Thursday's 19-minute "Study Session", 3 district members were absent and didn't bother to take the time to participate on-the-phone. That circumstance is unusual in itself when half of the seats for elected district reps were left empty. Item 5-d got no attention whatsoever.
Note: It takes anyone - including members of the public - a lot of time to access and review basic information provided in all the meeting detail's attachments.

COUNCIL REPORT 4 Pages
Purpose and Recommendation:
To consider the proposed Development Agreement (DA) between the City of Mesa and Signal Butte Grid, LLC. The DA allows Signal Butte Grid, LLC to opt-in to the LI PAD (Elliot Road Tech Corridor zoning overlay) which includes a variety of stipulations for future development of the site (outlined below).
By allowing the property owner to “Opt-In” to the LI PAD Overlay, the zoning of this property will be changed from Agriculture (AG) use to Light Industrial with a Planned Area Development (LI PAD) zoning
Noted in the Discussion:". . . By allowing Signal Butte Grid, LLC to opt-in, the City is setting them up to create the most advantageous economic and environmental balance of build-out land uses based on community and regional characteristics.
By opting-in, to create the most advantageous economic and environmental balance of build-out land uses .

Background (excerpts from the Council ReportThe area included in the Elliot Road Technology Corridor has been planned for employment related uses for over 20 years.
The installation of high-capacity utilities along Elliot Road, and the presence of Apple’s Global Command Center in the Corridor make this an attractive area for employers and developers in need of “shovel ready” development.
The city’s initiation of this rezoning case was a direct effort to rezone the corridor to Light Industrial so that prospective high-tech employers, like Signal Butte Grid, LLC, can move directly into the more abbreviated site planning process and construct their needed facilities.

GEO-FENCING > The Threats and Dangers To Civil Liberties
"Imagine how this would have gone for someone without the funds to hire a lawyer… or for any number of people who may feel there's nothing they can do to prevent cops from obtaining their information from a third party. . ."
That's the opening from an article from one of your MesaZona blogger's favorite source. With today's announcement of A NATIONAL EMERGENCY and giving the green light to more tracking and total surveillance, that Brave New World forecasted in 1984 is happening faster than anyone could have imagined.

". . . The novelty of this inverted interpretation of probable cause doesn't lend itself to simple answers. Clearing your name isn't as easy as showing up at the cop shop with a reasonable explanation about why your location data is all over the crime scene.
When rounding up the usual suspects means harvesting data on hundreds or thousands of innocent people, the possibility of putting the wrong person in jail increases exponentially.
McCoy's experience may be an outlier, but it won't be that way for long. . ."
Cops are using reverse warrants with increasing frequency, inverting the usual investigation process by demanding info about everyone in a certain area before trimming down the data haul to a list of suspects. It's sort of like canvassing a neighborhood, except investigators approach companies like Google, rather than people who might have seen something.
The problem with these dragnets is it makes everyone in the area a suspect. The more heavily-trafficked the area is, the more problematic this process is. Reverse warrants have already resulted in innocent people being jailed. This report by NBC News is another cautionary tale -- one that involves a man who became a suspect in a robbery just because he wandered into the geofence set up by cops.

Florida PD's Reverse Warrant Leads To Innocent Man Being Targeted In A Robbery Investigation
from the let-me-ride-my-bike-through-the-wide-open-country-that-I-love dept

Riding your bike while sending out geolocation data is the hot new crime.
The email arrived on a Tuesday afternoon in January, startling Zachary McCoy as he prepared to leave for his job at a restaurant in Gainesville, Florida. This put McCoy in the very uncomfortable position of proving his innocence even before he had even been charged with a crime. Realizing there was a good possibility approaching the department directly would result in his immediate arrest, McCoy hired a lawyer using money given to him by his parents from their savings. His lawyer, Caleb Kenyon, went to court to get the warrant killed. . . "
It was from Google’s legal investigations support team, writing to let him know that local police had demanded information related to his Google account. The company said it would release the data unless he went to court and tried to block it. He had just seven days.
[...]
In the notice from Google was a case number. McCoy searched for it on the Gainesville Police Department’s website, and found a one-page investigation report on the burglary of an elderly woman’s home 10 months earlier. The crime had occurred less than a mile from the home that McCoy, who had recently earned an associate degree in computer programming, shared with two others.
Now McCoy was even more panicked and confused. He knew he had nothing to do with the break-in ─ he’d never even been to the victim’s house ─ and didn’t know anyone who might have. And he didn’t have much time to prove it.
