A Few Nuggets of News From Jon Talton: "It's A Dangerous Time To Write"

They're all taken from this piece on July 20th:
https://www.roguecolumnist.com/Climate, Click-Bait & More
"...We're in a time of hysteria and thoughtcrime, made worse by social media.
So, a few nuggets that stay within the guardrails (I have a day job to protect).
• Click Bait News Releases fill my mailboxes every day. I don't use most because they're based on questionable premises and shoddy data.
Unfortunately, too much struggling media do.
Hence, the recent story ranking Phoenix as "the best city in the U.S. for working remotely."
It was carried unquestioningly by KTAR and the Phoenix Business Journal, among other local outlets. . Phoenix was No. 1, followed by Atlanta, Kansas City, Raleigh, and Toledo... Phoenix's economy is largely divided among 1) Real estate/construction; 2) Services for the large retiree population; 3) Tourism and hospitality, and 4) Back office/call center work. It has a relatively small slice of legacy tech/advanced industries, such as Intel and Boeing Helicopters*, much smaller than peer metros.
BLOGGER NOTE: "Boeing Helicopters" is here in Mesa
NUGGETS: So let's say the headline is misleading and the story really is about Phoenix being cheap...

Arizona's Rugged Individualism Poses Barrier to Mask Rules
is the headline of an Associated Press story on our state's stunning rise in Covid-19 cases (at least we're No. 1 in something, dear boosters). Resistance to masks, it asserts, "continues a visceral opposition to government mandates, a fierce individualism that has endured among some in Arizona since the days of the Wild West."
That's pretty neat were it not only crass reductionism but simply wrong.
The Anglo population of Arizona has only the most tenuous connection to pioneer days. Most are from the Midwest, including Gov. Doug Ducey (born in Toledo). Anyone who does have deep roots should know that "rugged individualism" was a myth. The government pacified native tribes, provided incentives for railroads, built massive reclamation projects and saved the state during the Great Depression. The feds stepped in again after World War II with Cold War industries, the Central Arizona Project, flood control, and subsidies for SUBURBANIZATION. . .
What we're seeing today is not the Wild West but, for too many, the Wild Midwest — a disposable place for waves of newcomers who are there to make a quick buck or retire.
Pay for schools? Hell, no. They "already did that back home!" (How many times I heard this refrain when working as a columnist for the Arizona Republic).
The sprawled, car-dependent, walled-off layout further weakens civic connections. And “resort culture” — where some would do all sorts of sociopathic acting out they would never do “back home.”
As for the pandemic, Arizona rushed to reopen and is now paying the price. And Ducey, and his puppetmaster Trump, owns it.

Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco >> Tune in 8/6: The Impact of COVID-19 on the Child Care Market

Plus research and updates from Community Development at the SF Fed
An Update from Community Development at the SF Fed

The Impact of COVID-19 on the Child Care Market
Thursday, August 6th | 12:00 p.m. PT / 3:00 p.m. ET

Join us on August 6th for a Connecting Communities® webinar on the impact of COVID-19 on the child care market. Child care plays a critical role in people’s ability to work, but many lower-income households do not have the economic resources to afford high-quality child care. On the provider side, already-low margins mean many providers may close due to pandemic-related cost increases and revenue reductions.

Tune in to learn how public policy and non-government organizations can address child care challenges that existed before and are exaggerated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Speakers will discuss how a successful response to the pandemic will require strengthening the child care sector to address the short-term economic threat and provide for a more sustainable business model for child care operators. The program will highlight how bolstering the sector can advance progress on racial and economic equity through access to high-quality child care.

Transforming Conflict to Empower Community and Decrease Displacement in Gentrifying Communities

Conflict Transformation (CT) is an approach that grapples with and seeks to address deep social conflicts in addition to visible disputes. CT holds promise for helping communities navigate the challenges of gentrification in ways that bridge differences, facilitate communication, and further equity. Transformative $40M Gift to LISC - The Largest in Its History - Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott Is Accelerating Progress

MacKenzie Scott Makes Transformative $40M Gift to LISC

7.28.2020 - LISC StoriesPress Releases
Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott is donating an extraordinary $40 million unrestricted grant to LISC.  It is the largest gift from an individual in LISC’s 40-year history—one that not only speaks to the value of LISC’s ongoing efforts but also to the power and efficacy of community development, as a whole, to help advance racial and economic justice and spur opportunity throughout the country, according to Maurice A. Jones, LISC president and CEO.
“This is a catalytic gift to support vital and meaningful work,” Jones said. “We are humbled and incredibly grateful to MacKenzie for her generosity, creativity, confidence and vision—using her resources in bold ways to invest in efforts to create and sustain stronger futures for American families and communities for many years to come.”
“We are humbled and incredibly grateful to MacKenzie—using her resources in bold ways to invest in efforts to create and sustain stronger futures for American families and communities for many years to come.”
— Maurice A. Jones, LISC CEO
Jones said a gift of this size and quality will be transformative because it will seed new capacity, nurture innovation and expand the scale of proven, effective approaches. “This is more than an investment in LISC,” he said. “It is an investment in the efforts of our partners all across the country as they fight to advance racial and economic justice, protect, preserve and produce quality affordable housing, support existing and new small businesses, improve the social determinants of health and wellbeing, strengthen education and expand access for people of color and others to quality jobs. It has a remarkable reach.”
In a Medium post announcing her giving priorities, Scott pointed to the heart-breaking challenges of 2020.
“Life will never stop finding fresh ways to expose inequities in our systems; or waking us up to the fact that a civilization this imbalanced is not only unjust, but also unstable.”
She also expressed optimism, noting that organizations like LISC are well-positioned to accelerate progress. “What fills me with hope is the thought of what will come if each of us reflects on what we can offer. Opportunities that flowed from the mere chance of skin color, sexual orientation, gender, or zip code may have yielded resources that can be powerful levers for change.”
Jones agreed that this funding is particularly important in this moment, as COVID-19 and the recession continue to lay bare the deep race and class disparities that limit opportunities for millions of Americans.
“As a country, we are at a crossroads,” he stressed.
“We cannot continue to leave millions of people behind, no matter how hard they work, and treat it as a normal byproduct of the American economy. Everyone, regardless of their race, class or ZIP code, should have the opportunity to thrive, and contribute to a broadly shared prosperity. That’s what all of us at LISC are focused on every day.”
With the largest gift from an individual in LISC’s history, MacKenzie Scott is fueling transformative efforts to advance racial and economic justice and building a broadly shared prosperity throughout the country. Scott said organizations like LISC are “well-positioned to accelerate progress.”

PRESS RELEASE | High Pollution Advisory issued for ozone effective July 31, 2020 in the Phoenix area

High Pollution Advisory HPA Maricopa County Phoenix
The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) is issuing a High Pollution Advisory (HPA) for ozone effective July 31, 2020, in the Phoenix area.
About ADEQ
Under the Environmental Quality Act of 1986, the Arizona State Legislature established the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality in 1987 as the state agency for protecting and enhancing public health and the environment of Arizona.
For more information, visit azdeq.gov.
ADEQ recommends that people limit outdoor activity while the HPA is in effect, especially children and adults with respiratory problems.
Ground level ozone forms when two types of pollutants—volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NOx)—react in sunlight.
These pollutants come primarily from automobiles, but also from other sources including industries, power plants, and products, such as solvents and paints. Generally, the highest levels of ozone occur in the afternoon.
Check the Hourly Air Quality Forecast on the Air Arizona Mobile App
Apple iTunes > | Google Play >
Health Impacts
People most vulnerable to the impacts of air pollution include children, older adults, adults exercising outdoors, people with heart or lung disease and those suffering from asthma and bronchitis. Exposure can increase the number and severity of asthma attacks, cause or aggravate bronchitis or other lung disease and reduce the body’s ability to fight infection. Symptoms may include itchy eyes, nose, and throat, wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain and upper respiratory issues.
Please help reduce ozone by doing one or more of the following:
  • Drive as little as possible
  • Re-fuel your vehicle in the evening
  • Avoid waiting in long drive-thru lines, if possible
  • Use low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) or water-based paints, stains, finishes and paint strippers – delay big painting projects
  • Make sure containers of household cleaners, garage and yard chemicals and other solvents are sealed properly to prevent vapors from evaporating into the air
Be Air Aware!
Stay informed and be a part of the ADEQ air quality challenge. Together we can make a difference to improve air quality for everyone in Arizona by following three simple steps. | Learn More >
