Hype & Happenstance > Mesa Council Study Session Mon 02.08.2021

The non-profit Mesa city newsroom (where Kevin Christopher gets paid more than $145,000 and generous benefits every year) keeps putting out the "news" they want to believe in - latest press release was the day after a Mesa City Council meeting three days ago...
Take the time to watch what City Manager Chris Brady replied to a question posed by Hizzoner John Giles. In a nutshell all the small business COVID Aid, Relief and Economic Security [CARES] was already spent last year by the end of December 31st!
But now (to quote from the news release by Kevin Christopher] :
". . . The City of Mesa is trying to do everything it can during the COVID-19 pandemic to help businesses have a more robust schedule and operate as normally as possible. . ."
OK Kevin.
PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO WATCH-AND-LISTEN to this presentation about Item 5-b. There are images included that show what the outdoor dining areas look like.

Mesa Open Air allows more businesses to expand outdoors

February 9, 2021 at 9:29 am
It is a creative, healthy and safe way to enjoy our fabulous weather and give Mesa businesses a big boost! The City has started Mesa Open Air, allowing businesses to temporarily move their waiting areas outdoors to parking spots, sidewalks, green spaces and other places normally off limits.

The City of Mesa is trying to do everything it can during the COVID-19 pandemic to help businesses have a more robust schedule and operate as normally as possible. Mesa Open Air encourages businesses to take advantage of our sunny, comfortable winter and early spring temperatures and safely serve more customers.
Mesa Open Air is modeled after the highly successful Mesa Al Fresco program, adopted in September, to help restaurants and bars expand their services outdoors.
REALITY CHECK Mesa Open Air is modeled after the highly successful Mesa Al Fresco program,??

While businesses will need to pay for equipment needed to expand outdoors, permit fees will be waived, and the goal is to approve applications within two to four business days. Business owners will need to obtain approval from landlords or property managers and the expansion plans must comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), social distancing and other life/safety requirements to protect the public.
Heather Omta, Development Services Small Business Assistant, will be the central point of contact to receive, review and approve expansion requests. For more information, contact Heather at heather.omta@mesaaz.gov or (480) 644-6451. To apply, visithttps://www.mesaaz.gov/home/showpublisheddocument?id=42444.

Historian Heather Cox Richardson Says Trump Could be Convicted ...

What could be more important than that right now? . . and what about the history behind today's bizarre bi-polar politicized politics.
“We’re in an inflection moment of American politics, and one of the things that happens in that moment is that a lot of people get involved in politics again,”
> Dr. Richardson confounds many of the media’s assumptions about this moment. She built a huge and devoted following on Facebook, which is widely and often accurately viewed in media circles as a home of misinformation, and where most journalists don’t see their personal pages as meaningful channels for their work.

She is the breakout star of the newsletter platform Substack, doing the opposite of most media as she calmly situates the news of the day in the long sweep of American history.

. . .She’s not the only one to have realized that a lot of people feel left out of the media conversation. Many of the most interesting efforts in journalism in 2021, some of them nonprofit organizations inspired by last summer’s protests over racism, will be trying to reach people who are not part of that in-group chat.

Shocking. Trump's lawyers' brief (p. 2) reads as if it came straight from Reconstruction. It says Ds are using Americans' horror and confusion over January 6 to gain political advantage. In 1866, white supremacists said the same about those trying to protect Black lives.
