The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) is issuing a High Pollution Advisory (HPA) for ozone effective July 27, 2021, in the Phoenix area. ADEQ recommends that people limit outdoor activity while the HPA is in effect, especially children and adults with respiratory problems. Ground-level ozone forms when two types of pollutants — volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) — react in sunlight. These pollutants come primarily from automobiles, but also from other sources, including industries, power plants and products, such as solvents and paints. Generally, the highest levels of ozone occur in the afternoon. The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality has issued an Ozone High Pollution Advisory for Tuesday, July 27.  WOOD BURNING RESTRICTIONS AVOID LEAF BLOWING Prohibited for government entities AVOID USING  OFF-ROAD VEHICLES

Restrictions Wood burning in residential fireplaces, chimeneas, outdoor fire pits, and similar outdoor fires is prohibited in Maricopa County. This includes individuals and businesses which have burn permits for open burning. Employees and contractors of government entities are prohibited from operating leaf blowers. Residents are encouraged to avoid leaf blowing during HPAs. Off-road vehicle use should be avoided. Take Action Drive as little as possible: carpool, use public transit, or telecommute. For information on transportation alternatives, visit Valley Metro: www.ShareTheRide.com  Fuel your vehicle after dark or during cooler evening hours. Reduce your time waiting in long drive-thru lines. For example, at coffee shops, fast-food restaurants, or banks. Park your vehicle and go inside. Use low-VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) or water-based paints, stains, finishes and paint strippers. Delay big painting projects until HPAs have passed. Make sure containers of household cleaners, garage and yard chemicals and other solvents are sealed properly to prevent vapors from evaporating into the air. Eliminate wood burning in fireplaces, stoves, chimeneas, and outdoor fire pits. Avoid using leaf blowers. Use a rake or broom to keep debris out of the road and away from storm drains, ditches, and streams. Conserve electricity.   Transportation Coordinators Due to unhealthy levels of ozone, Maricopa County Air Quality Department requests all Transportation Coordinators to email employees and activate your HPA plans. The department encourages the use of alternative modes of transportation, especially when pollution levels are expected to be on the rise.     Remind employees that they are encouraged to make more clean air. By taking small, simple steps every day, we can all make a difference. The months of April through September make up our Valley’s longer-than-normal "ozone season."     "High Pollution Advisory" or "HPA" means the highest concentration of pollution may exceed the federal health standard. Active children, adults and people with lung disease such as asthma should reduce prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion. Maricopa County employers enlisted in the Travel Reduction Program are asked to activate their HPA plans on high pollution advisory days.

Western Fires Trigger Massachusetts Air Alert 2,000 Miles Away

Massachusetts has issued an air quality advisory after smoke from West Coast wildfires more than 2,000 miles away drifted over the Bay State.

Monday’s advisory covered most of the state outside of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket and was set to last until midnight. Parts of western and central Massachusetts experienced unhealthy air quality Monday, according to a state Department of Environmental Protection website -- meaning even healthy people were encouraged to limit exposure.

Monitors in the Boston area were recording moderate air quality Monday.

"Billionaire Bernard Arnault has announced a post-pandemic growth spurt at his fashion-luxury empire LVMH—which owns brands like Louis Vuitton, Givenchy and Christian Dior—as plans for to grab even more of the market gather momentum.

On Monday LVMH announced revenues of $33.9 billion for the first half of 2021, up 56% compared to the same period in 2020, with much of the growth driven by fashion and leather goods, for which revenue rose from $9.4 billion in the first half of 2020, to $16.3 billion in the first half of 2021. Sales in the U.S. and Asia were “up sharply since the start of the year,” the company said, with Europe’s recovery from the pandemic more “gradual.”

Arnault, chairman and CEO of LVMH, celebrated an “excellent half-year,” claiming in a company statement that LVMH was “reaping the benefits of having continued to innovate and invest in its businesses throughout the pandemic despite being in the midst of a global crisis.” Arnault trumpeted the “integration” of U.S. jeweler Tiffany & Co, which it acquired in November 2020 for $15.8 billion.

During the pandemic Bernard Arnault briefly became the world’s richest person when his estimated net worth hit $186.3 billion in late May this year. Arnault’s fortune rose from $76 billion in March 2020, and today sits at $191 billion, behind Amazon’s Jeff Bezos on $211 billion.
