TIME WILL TELL: The Pandemic is Very Fluid. . .Must be something in The Air, Huh?

Intro: It's clear by now we don't know what we don't know
". . .The Omicron variant could soon run out of steam in the U.S., with many experts predicting cases will reach their peak within the coming weeks. A combination of high infection and vaccination rates mean the strain could soon run out of people to infect, and cases could quickly start declining soon.
One of the reasons cases may soon decline is the fact that the variant could eventually run out of people to infect.
Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Disease and the country's top infectious disease expert, said Tuesday the variant will eventually infect almost everyone in America.
'Omicron, with its extraordinary, unprecedented degree of efficiency of transmissibility, will ultimately find just about everybody,' Fauci said

Highly vaccinated Rhode Island holds highest infection rate in America by a large margin with 500 of every 100k residents testing positive for COVID: NJ, VA, go into emergency mode and Kentucky activates National Guard to combat surge

"The nation's leader in infection rate in Rhode Island, which has by far ran away from the rest of the pack in recent day. The state, where 77 percent of residents are fully vaccinated, is recording 507 positive cases every day for every 100,000 residents - a 226 percent increase over the past two weeks. No other state has more than 400 new cases every day per every 100,000 residents.

Massachusetts is the fourth and final state with an infection rate of over 300 per every 100,000 residents, at 359.

> All four states leading the nation have fully vaccinated more than 70 percent of their residents, and each are among the top 20 states in death rate by population.

In Virginia, a state of emergency has been declared by the Governor in an effort to combat capacity shortages during a surge in cases. Under the order, hospitals will be allowed to expand capacity and some regulations on staffing roles will be lifted. The state has suffered a 153 percent increase in cases over the past two weeks, with 200 of every 100,000 residents testing positive every day - both figures putting the state towards the middle of the pack. Virginia is also suffering 0.16 deaths per every 100,000 residents every day, the third lowest rate of any U.S. state.

New Jersey has been one of the hardest struck states by the Omicron-fueled Covid surge tearing through America. The state has the fourth highest infection rate in America, with 350 of every 100,000 residents testing positive for the virus daily.

Only four states are logging more than 300 cases per every 100,000 residents daily.

The US has recorded more than 62 million covid cases since the start of the pandemic. As a result of the highly infectious variant taking over, cases in the U.S. have rocketed in recent weeks. In two weeks, new daily cases have increased from around 235,269 per day to 750,515 per day - a 184 percent jump

[...] A promising sign is coming out of Boston, Massachusetts. The state is among those currently dealing with the worst of the surge, but wastewater data is showing a recent sharp decline in the amount of Covid in the local population.

Wastewater can be tested to find what level of an overall population is dealing with Covid. Traces of the virus are found in a person's urine and stool, and sewage centers can test massive samples to see prevalence of Covid in the population.

Earlier this year, prevalence of Covid in Boston wastewater began to surge, up to 10,000 RNA copies of the virus per milliliter sampled - more than triple previous levels. The figure has quickly declined to 6,000 copies per milliliter, a 40 percent drop in virus prevalence.

'But this suggests good news for the disruption caused by the sheer numbers of infections. Will likely take a few days to show up in case counts, which if they follow will show a peak around now. Just like there was a peak this time last year. Past is prologue,' Bill Hanage, an associate professor at the Harvard School of Public Health, wrote in a tweet.

Wastewater data from Boston, in Covid-struck Massachusetts, shows that Covid prevalence in sewage has dropped 40% this week after surging to record levels to start the year

Wastewater data from Boston, in Covid-struck Massachusetts, shows that Covid prevalence in sewage has dropped 40% this week after surging to record levels to start the year

The most promising sign for the U.S. is the current situation in England. Once the global hotspot for the variant, cases in the UK are down 45 percent over the past week, with around 120,000 people testing positive every day. While deaths and hospitalizations have risen in recent days, neither figure has managed to keep up with infections at all recently.

What happens in the UK often precedes the U.S. by a few weeks, and the current decline in cases across the pond matches predictions by American health officials that the virus will likely recede in the coming weeks. . ."

TRUMP PLAYING THE KING-MAKER: Arizona Rally on Same Day as MLK Family Rally To Urge Voting Rights

Intro: Beware the Ides of January 2022

Trump scheduled to hold rally in Arizona on same day MLK family to urge Congress to pass voting rights legislation

"Former President Donald Trump is set to hold a rally in Arizona on Jan. 15, the same day that the family of Martin Luther King Jr. will arrive in Phoenix for its own rally.

Jan. 15 marks what would have been the 93rd birthday of the slain civil rights leader. The family of Martin Luther King Jr. plans to launch a nationwide campaign that day to press Congress to pass legislation to enhance and protect voting rights.
Jannah Scott, with the African American Christian Clergy Coalition, will join the King family in Phoenix and told that Congress will dishonor King’s legacy if it does not pass voting reform legislation.

"President Biden, Congressmembers, our own senators: (Democratic Sens. Kyrsten) Sinema, (and Mark) Kelly ... don't get up on stages and talk about the greatness of America and how Dr. King did this, that, and the other without honoring his legacy,” Scott said. “Don't celebrate him without passing the legislation he died for.”

> Trump has spoken against the two voting bills currently stalled in Congress, the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Last month, the former president told Fox Business that the legislation is designed to make it easier for Democrats.
“They have a so-called voting rights bill, which is a voting rights for Democrats, because Republicans will never be elected again if that happens, if that passes,” Trump said.

Trump Rally Set for Saturday, Jan. 15, in Florence, Arizona

Former President Donald Trump will return once again to Arizona with a rally set for Saturday, Jan. 15. The news follows a crop of endorsements from the former president of various Arizona candidates ahead of the 2022 midterms.

The rally is being billed somewhat as a 2024 kickoff, potentially, as Trump plots a course forward into this busy election year. Trump last visited Arizona back in July of last year and the state remains a crucial battleground in the next presidential election cycle.

Former President Donald J. Trump will hold a rally in Arizona in January, a political action committee called Save America that is affiliated with the 45th president announced Thursday.

Trump will speak at 7 p.m. on Jan. 15 in Florence at the same location where the Country Thunder music festival is held. It will be his first rally appearance of 2022.

Kari Lake, one of several Republican candidates for governor in Arizona, announced her attendance for the upcoming rally on Twitter. She was endorsed by the former president in late September.

Other Arizona endorsements, beyond the governor’s race, include Rep. Paul Gosar and state Rep. and Secretary of State candidate Mark Finchem.

This will be Trump’s first political event of 2022 and marks an unofficial kickoff to the midterm election cycle.

Most of the speculation will surround whether Trump intends to run again in 2024, or use his platform, as it stands, to play kingmaker in the various 2022 primaries.

Putin: Maidan 'technologies' used in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan crisis attempt to copy 2014 Ukrainian 'Maidan' – Putin

Troops from a number of former Soviet republics have been deployed in the wake of mass protests
Kazakhstan crisis attempt to copy 2014 Ukrainian 'Maidan' – Putin

"Violent and bloody clashes in Kazakhstan are a form of aggression leveled against the country, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said, claiming the same tactics used in Ukraine in 2014 were deployed to coordinate protests.

Speaking as part of a meeting of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) on Monday, Putin said that the mutual defense pact’s troops were working to secure the Central Asian nation after armed groups captured a number of key facilities and effectively took control of its largest city, Almaty. Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev requested military support last week, insisting that the country was under attack from foreign terrorists.

“Well-organized and well-controlled groups of militants were used,” President Putin alleged, “including those who had apparently been trained in terrorist camps abroad.” At the same time, he went on, “Maidan technologies” were used to support the rioters and share information, akin to those that led to the ousting of the Ukrainian government.

However, according to the Russian president, the threat to Kazakhstan’s stability comes not from the spontaneous protests which started over fuel price rises, but from those who escalated it into an armed conflict.

Putin also added that the CSTO peacekeeping force deployed to Kazakhstan last week is acting in a timely and legitimate way, despite concerns in the West that the move could pose a threat to the sovereignty of the Central Asian country. In a series of remarks to journalists over the weekend, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken claimed that “one lesson of recent history is that once Russians are in your house, it’s sometimes very difficult to get them to leave.”

However, Putin said, the troops from Russia, Belarus, and a number of other former Soviet Republics will only be stationed there for a limited period, and will withdraw once they have achieved their main objectives. According to him, the situation in the country is already stabilizing and groups of militants have been cleared from a number of vital facilities.

CSTO peacekeepers began arriving in Almaty over the past few days to guard the city’s airport after it was captured by anti-government protesters. Mass unrest broke out across much of the vast country after the New Year, with demonstrators taking to the streets following a steep rise in the price of liquified petroleum gas (LPG), which is used by many to power their cars and had previously been subsidized by the government.

SPECIAL FEATURE: Open Future Blog...Cultural Predators

Every now and then something published online stands out from a plethora of others. By chance or by happenstance in a few strokes on the keyboard there was a surprise to find two new sources of information to upload early this morning:

How The Financialization Of Music Could Lead To Demands For Perpetual Copyright

    from the just-another-asset-class? dept

"Back in October, I noted the huge amounts of money pouring into music copyrights, largely driven by the global rise of online streaming. Since then, that trend has continued, most notably with Bruce Springsteen's sale of his recordings and songwriting catalogue to Sony, for a rumored $550 million.

As I pointed out in the post, one of the problems with this "financialization" of the sector is that music copyrights become completely divorced from the original creativity that lies behind them. They become just another asset, like gold, petroleum or property. On the Open Future blog, Paul Keller has pointed out a plausible – and terrifying – consequence of this shift.

As Keller notes, the more the owners of copyrights become detached from the creative production process, the less they will care about the nominal balances within the system. In particular, the central quid pro quo of copyright – that a government monopoly is granted to creators for a limited period, after which the work enters the public domain – will be perceived simply as an obstacle to greater profits. The financialization of the music world means that an artist's ability to use the public domain as a foundation for future creativity, or to take advantage of copyright exceptions, will be of no interest to the corporations and private equity firms that are only concerned about the value of their own assets. For Keller, the end-game is clear:

From the perspective of financial investors, copyright is not much more than a bundle of rights created out of thin air that structure financial flows and it follows that there is absolutely no reason why they should not push for governments to make these rights last longer. Once the slate of recording artists that entered into these deals have passed away and will not be able to speak up anymore – or complain that they have been shafted – it will only be a question of time until financial investors start pushing for longer term durations or – more likely – perpetual copyright. Compared to this new class of cultural predators, the good old Walt Disney company will quickly start looking like an innocent schoolboy.

It has been hard enough in the past to make copyright a little fairer for members of the public. If Keller is right – and I fear he is – it will become close to impossible to continue that process in the future unless people start defending vociferously what few rights that they currently have in the world of copyright."
