LATEST NEWS UKRAINE

Ukraine’s hopes for a more concrete perspective on NATO membership during a July summit in Vilnius are currently under threat of disruption, as countries like the US and Germany do not want to take on specific commitments yet, according to RND, citing the German Press Agency (DPA).

According to DPA, the US and Germany recently made it clear behind closed doors that they “do not want to make any commitments for the time being that go substantially beyond a vague NATO declaration from 2008.”

At that time, the heads of state and government agreed that Ukraine and Georgia should join NATO. However, there was no specific schedule for this.

The publication recalls that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently called on NATO to clear the path for his country to join the Alliance at the summit in July.

He explained that neither in Ukraine, nor in Europe, nor in NATO would most of the population understand if Kyiv did not receive the deserved invitation during the summit in Lithuania.

Zelensky emphasized that now hardly anyone contributes more to Euro-Atlantic security than Ukrainian soldiers. Therefore, his country has done everything for Kyiv’s application to be approved.

It is noted that the President of Ukraine receives support for his demands from Central and Eastern European countries, in particular Lithuania.

“However, it is currently extremely unlikely that they will be able to persuade NATO partners such as the USA to change course. According to diplomats, opponents of a concrete prospect of accession explain their position by saying that this goal is currently not realistic and could distract from the much more important support for Ukraine. In addition, there is a risk that new NATO commitments could provide Russia with arguments for even more aggressive warfare,” the publication writes, citing unnamed diplomats.

As reported by DPA, citing discussions in NATO circles, real progress in negotiations on Ukraine’s membership prospects is likely to occur only if Ukraine succeeds in the war against Russia.

It is noted that then NATO countries would not have to fear becoming a direct party to the war by accepting Ukraine.

At the request of journalists, the US government did not comment on the internal negotiations before the summit in Lithuania. However, the source indirectly confirmed that it considers further arms supplies and other assistance to Ukraine in the current situation more important than NATO membership plans.

A senior official said it is now also being considered what can be done in the long-term to strengthen Ukraine’s ability to resist and deter aggression.

Regarding Ukraine’s NATO membership prospects, the source made it clear that the US does not question the NATO declaration of 2008 but “the question is not whether Ukraine will join the Alliance, but when.”

Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated that Ukraine’s place is rightfully in NATO, so the Alliance promises to do everything to make this possible.

In addition, the US State Department recently supported the open-door policy when commenting on Ukraine’s NATO membership issue.

In turn, Lithuania calls on NATO member countries to find specific mechanisms that would allow Ukraine to quickly integrate into the Alliance’s space and finally get rid of clichéd phrases about membership."

Kiev’s hopes of joining the bloc anytime soon will likely be shattered, dpa news agency reports
German media shares details of NATO-Ukraine talks

Washington and Berlin aren’t ready to make any promises to Kiev regarding Ukraine’s future NATO membership, German news agency dpa has reported.

Ukraine’s hopes of joining the US-led military bloc anytime soon are likely to be shattered, the agency claimed on Tuesday.

According to dpa’s information, the bloc’s key players such as the US and Germany recently made it clear to Kiev behind closed doors that they currently don’t want to make any further commitments on the issue, beyond the vague NATO declaration of 2008.

Back then, the leaders of the NATO member-states said that Ukraine and another former Soviet republic, Georgia, should join the bloc, but didn’t provide any timetable for the accession of either.

During his visit to Kiev last month, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg reiterated that “Ukraine’s rightful place is in NATO.” He also projected that “over time, our support will help to make this possible,” but refrained from saying when exactly Ukraine’s NATO membership is going to happen.

However, a few days later, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius suggested that “this is not the time to decide” about Ukraine’s place in NATO. The bloc’s members should consider this issue “with a cool head and a hot heart. Not the other way around,” Pistorius said.

The German minister’s comments have angered Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Piotr Wawrzyk, who claimed that “it’s known that France, Germany, and countries in Western Europe, in general, have always been against Ukraine joining either the EU or NATO.”

Earlier this week Gitanas Nauseda, the president of another NATO member-state, Lithuania, said that it “would be too difficult” to make Ukraine a member of the bloc as long as the conflict with Russia continues. The Kiev government is also well aware of this, he added.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s top adviser, Mikhail Podoliak, has recently reiterated Kiev's desire to join the alliance, claiming that it would be impossible to restore security in Europe without “the country’s full membership in NATO.”

Moscow, which sees NATO’s eastward expansion as a major security threat, had singled out Ukraine’s push to join the bloc among the main reasons for launching its military operation against Kiev more than a year ago."

"T-Mobile disclosed the second data breach of 2023 after discovering that attackers had access to the personal information of hundreds of customers for more than a month, starting late February 2023.

Compared to previous data breaches reported by T-Mobile, the latest of which impacted 37 million people, this incident affected only 836 customers. Still, the amount of exposed information is highly extensive and exposes affected individuals to identity theft and phishing attacks.

"In March 2023, the measures we have in place to alert us to unauthorized activity worked as designed and we were able to determine that a bad actor gained access to limited information from a small number of T-Mobile accounts between late February and March 2023," the company said in data breach notification letters sent to affected individuals just before the weekend, on Friday, April 28, 2023.

T-Mobile said the threat actors didn't gain access to call records or affected individuals' personal financial account info, but the exposed personally identifiable information contains more than enough data for identity theft.

While the exposed information varied for each of the affected customers, it could include "full name, contact information, account number and associated phone numbers, T-Mobile account PIN, social security number, government ID, date of birth, balance due, internal codes that T-Mobile uses to service customer accounts (for example, rate plan and feature codes), and the number of lines."

After detecting the security breach, T-Mobile proactively reset account PINs for impacted customers and now offers them two years of free credit monitoring and identity theft detection services through Transunion myTrueIdentity.

A T-Mobile spokesperson was not immediately available for comment when contacted by BleepingComputer earlier today to ask for more details.

Second data breach disclosed in 2023

This is the second such incident T-Mobile has revealed since the start of the year, with the previous data breach disclosed on January 19, after attackers stole the personal information of 37 million customers by abusing a vulnerable Application Programming Interface (API) in November 2022.

The mobile carrier spotted the threat actors' malicious activity on January 5 and cut off their access to its systems within 24 hours.

T-Mobile described the data stolen in the January breach as "basic customer information," including "name, billing address, email, phone number, date of birth, T-Mobile account number and information such as the number of lines on the account and plan features."

Since 2018, the mobile carrier has disclosed seven other data breaches, including one that exposed the information of roughly 3% of all T-Mobile customers.

Other incidents reported by T-Mobile during the last few years include:
