US says Russian fighter jets again harass Reaper drones in ‘reckless’ and ‘dangerous’ act

US says Russian fighter jets again harass Reaper drones in Syria

Russian fighter jets accused of conducting dangerous manoeuvres for second day near US military drones over Syria.

"Russian fighter jets have again flown dangerously close to several US MQ-9 Reaper drones operating over Syria – the second such incident of harassment in 24 hours – setting off flares and forcing Washington’s unmanned aerial vehicles to take evasive manoeuvres, the United States air force said.
The protest from the US air forces came as the French military said that two of its fighter jets on patrol over the Iraq-Syria border area were forced to manoeuvre “to control the risk of accident” involving a Russian Sukhoi SU-35 warplane on Thursday.
The Russian aircraft had engaged in “non-professional interaction” with two of France’s Rafale planes deployed to the region as part of “Operation Chammal”, which seeks to contain the ISIL (ISIS) group in Iraq and Syria, the French military said.
  • Two separate incidents on Wednesday and Thursday involving Russian warplanes and US Reaper drones were captured on video, the US said.
“The events represent a new level of unprofessional and unsafe action by Russian air forces operating in Syria,” the US military said.

“We urge Russian forces in Syria to cease this reckless behaviour and adhere to the standards of behaviour expected of a professional air force so we can resume our focus on the enduring defeat of ISIS,” Lieutenant General Alexus Grynkewich, head of US Air Forces Central Command, said in a statement.
  • In the first incident, which took place about 10:40am (07:40 GMT) local time on Wednesday in northwest Syria, Russian Sukhoi SU-35 fighters closed in on a Reaper drone, and one of the Russian pilots moved their aircraft in front of the US aerial vehicles and engaged the SU-35’s afterburner, which greatly increases its speed and air pressure.
  • The jet blast from the afterburner could have potentially damaged the Reaper’s electronics, and Grynkewich said it reduced the drone operator’s ability to safely operate the aircraft.
Later, a number of so-called parachute flares released by the Russian planes moved into the drone’s flight path. The flares are attached to parachutes.

In the second incident, which took place over northwest Syria at approximately 9:30am (06:30 GMT) on Thursday local time, “Russian aircraft dropped flares in front of the drones and flew dangerously close, endangering the safety of all aircraft involved,” Grynkewich said.
  • The Reaper drones involved in the incidents were not armed with weapons and are commonly used for reconnaissance missions.
Earlier this year, a diplomatic dispute erupted briefly when the US claimed that Russian jets were responsible for the downing of a Reaper drone, valued at more than $30m and packed with sensitive US spying technology, operating over the Black Sea.

  • Moscow denied its warplanes were responsible for the drone crashing into the sea in March but video footage released by the US military showed the Russian planes engaged in manoeuvres to hamper the drone’s flight path.
  • US officials said the Russian jets flew around and in front of the Reaper drone several times for 30 to 40 minutes, and then one “struck the propeller” of the drone, “causing US forces to have to bring the MQ-9 down in international waters”.

The US said the drone was operating in international airspace, reportedly west of Ukraine’s Crimea over the Black Sea.
Of the latest incidents, US Army General Erik Kurilla, head of US Central Command, said in a statement that Russia’s violation of ongoing efforts to clear the airspace over Syria “increases the risk of escalation or miscalculation”.
About 900 US forces are deployed to Syria to work with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces battling ISIL fighters.
In April, Russian forces operating in Syria accused the US military of engaging in “provocative actions” on the ground.

Russian jets 'harass' US drones again in ‘reckless’ and ‘dangerous’ act: Pentagon

The Air Force has called on Russia's pilots to immediately cease their "reckless" and "unsafe" behavior after two consecutive days of aggression.

Russian pilots who downed US drone given award

The Pentagon is seething at the Kremlin's harassment of US drones flying over Syria after Russian pilots came "dangerously close" for a second day running, threatening a major escalation.
A new clip released by the US military on Thursday showed the Russian aircraft flying "dangerously close" to the US drones while dropping flares in eastern Syria.
The Air Force said that the move endangered the “safety of all aircraft involved”.
It came just one day after the military released a similar video.
The Air Force blasted Russia's act as "unsafe and unprofessional" and called on the Kremlin’s pilots to immediately cease their "reckless" behavior.

Lt Gen Alexus Grynkewich, Commander, 9th AF and CFACC for CENTCOM, said in a statement: "Russian military aircraft engaged in unsafe and unprofessional behavior Thursday, 9.30am local time, while interacting with US MQ-9 drones carrying out our D-ISIS mission in Syria.
"Russian aircraft dropped flares in front of the drones and flew dangerously close, endangering the safety of all aircraft involved.
"This is the second instance of dangerous behaviors by Russian pilots within the past 24 hours, with the first happening Wednesday at approximately 10.40am local time.”
The two clips show Russian SU-35 fighters traveling into the flight path of the American MQ-9 Reaper drones, forcing them to make evasive maneuvers.

Grynkewich added: "These events represent another example of unprofessional and unsafe actions by Russian air forces operating in Syria, which threaten the safety of both Coalition and Russian forces.

"We urge Russian forces in Syria to cease this reckless behavior and adhere to the standards of behavior expected of a professional air force so we can resume our focus on the enduring defeat of ISIS.

"The US Air Forces Central remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of its personnel and assets and continues to work closely with partners and allies to address these incidents and prevent any escalation of tensions in the region.

"The safety of military personnel and the success of the mission against ISIS depend on the professional and responsible conduct of all forces operating in the region."

  • The US has around 900 American troops stationed in eastern Syria engaged in a mission to wipe out ISIS, a terrorist organization.

  • Russia also has a military presence in northwestern Syria to support Syrian dictator President Bashar al-Assad.

Referring to the incident on Wednesday, Army Gen. Erik Kurilla, head of US Central Command, said Russia's actions increase "the risk of escalation or miscalculation".

The US and Russia normally use a deconfliction line between their militaries in Syria to steer clear of unintentional mistakes or encounters that may accidentally trigger an escalation.

A Russian military spokesman claimed US drones have violated existing US-Russian air deconfliction protocols in an area of northern Syria.

But the US argued it is Russia’s military actions in the Middle East that have increasingly violated the deconfliction protocols, with officials saying pilots have developed a  "new way of operating".

Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder, the Pentagon's chief spokesman, said on Wednesday: "Did you see the video?

"We have rules in place, well-established processes and procedures and have very successfully de-conflicted with the Russians over many years when it comes to safe operations in that region."

He added that Russia’s suggestion that this is "somehow this is our fault is ridiculous".

This comes after Russian pilots sparked fury when they flew too close to US military bases in Syria. But these aggressive actions have also occurred outside of the country.

Back in March, a Russian SU-27 fighter jet crashed into an American-operated MQ-9 Reaper drone in international airspace over the Black Sea, forcing the US to bring its damaged aircraft down.

Zelenskyy's 'Theater of War': Clashes (as TV caneras documented it) with EU State Bulgarian President Rumen Radev over Ukraine's Weapons Demands

Zelensky clashes with EU state president over weapons demands

Ukraine’s leader berated his Bulgarian host in a televised meeting
Zelensky clashes with EU state president over weapons demands

"Bulgarian President Rumen Radev found himself lectured to by his Ukrainian guest Vladimir Zelensky on Thursday, after telling him that Sofia had no weapons to spare for Kiev. As TV cameras documented their meeting, Zelenskyy attacked Radev for advocating a diplomatic solution to the conflict.
“I do not agree to provide ammunition, especially from the Bulgarian army reserves,” Radev told Zelensky, according to one of the translations. “I continue to maintain that this conflict has no military solution and more and more weapons will not solve it.”
  • Zelensky objected to Radev’s use of the term “conflict,” insisting that “this is definitely a war.”
“God forbid, some tragedy should befall you and you should be in my place,” he added. “And if people with shared values do not help, what will you do? You would say: Putin, please grab Bulgarian territory?”
“I also want to tell you, whatever your army has in terms of munitions, it will not be enough to fight with the Russian Federation. You don’t have a bad army, your people are good but it would not be enough to fight against 160 million people. That is why it is good to give the people to defend themselves, so that the war does not come to you, to the Poles, to the Romanians – war knows no distance, I can tell you,” the Ukrainian leader told his host.
  • You cannot support Russia and support a balancing position because Russia wants to destroy NATO, wants to destroy Europe and the European Union; these are their goals. Do you get me?” Zelensky told Radev.
According to Politico’s description of the incident, Zelensky “savaged” Radev and “opened up with both barrels” to “maul” the Bulgarian president, delivering his words “with measured scorn” and “barbed irony” as Radev “took refuge” in the sheet of paper in his hands. The Bulgarian president eventually asked the cameras to leave the room.
NATO countries have sent billions of dollars worth of weapons, ammunition and equipment to Ukraine since February 2022, while insisting they were not directly involved in the conflict with Russia.
Earlier in the day, Zelensky met with the government of PM Nikolai Denkov, who has only been in office for a month. Denkov’s cabinet supports selling weapons to Kiev. The Ukrainian delegation departed Sofia for Prague, on board a Czech air force transport."
