China condemns US tariff strategy, vows retaliation against deals undermining its interests

21 April 2025 15:01

China has issued a strong warning against any trade arrangements between the United States and its global partners that come at the expense of Chinese interests, stating it will take decisive countermeasures should such agreements materialize.

In a statement released by a spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce, China reiterated its firm opposition to what it described as an emerging US strategy to pressure third countries into restricting trade ties with China in return for exemptions from punitive tariffs, Caliber.Az reports per Chinese media.

"China firmly opposes any deal between the United States and its trading partners at the expense of Chinese interests," the spokesperson said. "If such a situation arises, China will not accept it and will resolutely take corresponding countermeasures," the statement continued, underscoring Beijing’s determination to defend its "legitimate rights and interests."

The remarks came in response to growing reports that Washington is seeking to leverage its tariff policy to coerce other nations into aligning with its economic stance against China. Under the pretext of enforcing “reciprocity” in trade, the US has reportedly been imposing sweeping tariffs while pushing countries to enter into so-called “reciprocal tariff” negotiations.

"Under the guise of so-called 'reciprocity,' the United States has been recently arbitrarily imposing tariffs on all its trading partners while pressuring them to engage in so-called 'reciprocal tariff' negotiations," the spokesperson noted. "This is essentially using the banner of 'reciprocity' as a pretext to pursue hegemonic politics and unilateral bullying in the field of international economy and trade."

Beijing issued a stark warning against appeasement and compromise in the face of what it views as American economic coercion. "Appeasement does not bring peace, compromise does not lead to respect, and attempts to trade the interests of others for tariff exemptions are doomed to fail and will ultimately harm all parties involved," the spokesperson emphasized.

The Chinese government expressed respect for those nations that seek to resolve trade disputes with the United States through dialogue based on equality and mutual respect. However, it called on the international community to resist pressure, uphold multilateral trade principles, and reject economic bullying.

"China respects all parties that seek to resolve their trade disputes with the United States through equal consultation," the spokesperson said. "All parties [should] stand on the side of fairness and justice, align with the right side of history, and uphold international economic and trade rules and the multilateral trading system."

In a broader warning about the dangers of protectionist policies, the spokesperson cautioned against a return to a global trade environment dominated by power politics.

"In the face of unilateralism and protectionism, no country can remain unaffected," the statement declared. "Once international trade reverts to the law of the jungle, where the strong prey on the weak, all countries will suffer."

China reaffirmed its readiness to collaborate with other nations to counter unilateralism, defend common interests, and preserve the international economic order.

"China is ready to work with all parties to strengthen solidarity and coordination, jointly oppose unilateral bullying, safeguard respective legitimate rights and interests, and uphold international fairness and justice," the spokesperson concluded.

The White House has begun the process of looking for a new secretary of defense, according to a U.S. official who was not authorized to speak publicly.

This comes as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth continues to find himself mired in controversy. NPR has also confirmed with the same official that Hegseth shared details ahead of last month's Yemen strikes with his wife and brother in a Signal chat on his personal phone, minutes after being updated by a senior U.S. military official. The news of the second Signal group chat about the mission was first reported by The New York Times.

In March, Hegseth shared details about action against Houthi targets in Yemen in a Signal chat with top White House officials that accidentally included a journalist.

In the last few weeks, four senior advisers to Hegseth have left abruptly, some accused of leaking. They have all released public statements suggesting infighting within the department of defense.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt denied that there's an effort to replace Hegseth, posting on X that President Trump "stands strongly" behind him.

This breaking story will be updated.

Trump renews attack on Federal Reserve Chair Powell, Dow Jones tumbles 1,000 points

The Fed declined to comment on Monday’s latest rhetorical attacks. Powell has said flatly the president doesn’t have the legal authority to dismiss him.

  • While some top Trump advisers have previously said the administration will respect the Fed’s independence around monetary policy, Kevin Hassett, the director of the White House National Economic Council, on Friday said Trump is studying whether he’s able to fire the Fed chief.
  • On Monday, the S&P 500 index tumbled roughly 1.9 percent in the first hour of trading, bringing it more than 15 percent below its late-February peak.
  • The more narrow Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 1.8 percent, or about 750 points. Meanwhile, the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index fell 2.4 percent Monday as all of the “Magnificent 7” group of big tech companies suffered losses.

The dollar also lost value Monday in comparison to foreign currencies, with the DXY U.S. dollar index down about 1 percent by mid-morning.

President Donald Trump renewed his attacks on Federal Reserve Chair Jerome H. Powell on Monday, a move that exacerbated a stock sell off amid persistent uncertainty about the administration’s approach to trade and the economy.

Trump, taking to his social media platform Truth Social, referred to Powell as a “major loser” and said the U.S. economy could slow without an immediate reduction in the cost of money amid the fallout from his trade war.

“‘Preemptive Cuts’ in Interest Rates are being called for by many,” the president said. “Powell has always been ‘To [sic] Late.”

Trump referenced March inflation data, gathered before this month’s tariffs went into effect, to claim there is “virtually No Inflation.” A key gauge of inflation — the consumer price index — showed prices rose by 2.4 percent in March from a year earlier, which showed progress but was still higher than the Fed’s preferable 2 percent.

“With these costs trending so nicely downward, just what I predicted they would do, there can almost be no inflation, but there can be a SLOWING of the economy unless Mr. Too Late, a major loser, lowers interest rates, NOW,” Trump wrote.
