It is a compilation of SIPRI’s recent research into conflicts, arms transfers and military expenditure, but it places particular emphasis on what SIPRI sees as a dawning new arms race among the nine nuclear-armed states – the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, China, India, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel.

Although the number of nuclear warheads in the world is declining as the US and Russia gradually dismantle 1,000 retired warheads, new warheads are entering stockpiles and will eventually outpace these in the absence of any treaties reducing or limiting stockpiles, said SIPRI.

Improvements in potency, delivery and accuracy are also bringing about a new nuclear era, it said.

Since its inception in the early 20^th century, the Paris Air Show, the world's oldest and largest aerospace event, has always brought together the closely linked civil and military sectors of aviation. But for the 55^th edition, from June 16 to 22, the defense industry will hold the largest share of the booths at the Parc des Expositions of Le Bourget, northeast of Paris.

The world's leading aerospace gathering, which kicks off on Monday, is overshadowed by the war in Ukraine and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

Stéphane Troussel, the Socialist president of the departmental council of Seine-Saint-Denis, where the air show is held, along with all of the department's left-wing MPs, said they would refuse to participate in the show's opening on Monday, June 16, due to the presence of Israeli companies.
