The United States is the power of NATO

"Following the U.S. military operation to capture Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela, there are widespread concerns and explicit signals that Greenland is a priority target for the Trump administration’s next major geopolitical move.

While no military action has been launched against Greenland, the administration has taken the following escalatory steps:
  • Just hours after the Venezuela operation on January 3, 2026, Katie Miller (wife of Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller) posted an image of Greenland draped in the American flag on X with the single-word caption “SOON”.

Analysts and allies fear the capture of Maduro sets a precedent for the U.S. to ignore international sovereignty in the pursuit of its National Security Strategy, which emphasizes control over the “Western Hemisphere”.

  1. “The United States is the power of NATO. For the United States to secure the Arctic region to protect and defend NATO and NATO interests, obviously, Greenland should be part of the United States,” Miller continued. “And so that’s a conversation that we’re going to have, as a country.”
  2.  “But I will also make it clear that if the U.S. chooses to attack another NATO country militarily, then everything stops, including NATO and thus the security that has been established since the end of the Second World War,” she continued
  • President Trump has repeatedly stated that the U.S. needs Greenland “very badly” for international security.
  • He has consistently refused to rule out using military action to gain control of the territory, a stance echoed by Vice President JD Vance.
  • In late December 2025, Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy to Greenland. Landry explicitly stated his goal is to “make Greenland a part of the U.S.”.
  • Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen have condemned the “SOON” post and the envoy appointment as “disrespectful” and a violation of sovereignty, reiterating that “Greenland is not for sale”

Miller, in the interview, suggested his wife’s post was not a reflection of new policy of the administration. But he did not back down from his position that U.S. should control Greenland and questioned Denmark’s authority over the territory.

“The real question is, by what right does Denmark assert control over Greenland? What is the basis of their territorial claim? What is their basis of having Greenland as a colony of Denmark?” Miller asked when discussing the potential for the U.S. to try to take over Greenland.

“The United States is the power of NATO. For the United States to secure the Arctic region to protect and defend NATO and NATO interests, obviously, Greenland should be part of the United States,” Miller continued. “And so that’s a conversation that we’re going to have, as a country.”

Amid questions about which country could face a similar fate, Trump told reporters Sunday about Greenland: “It’s so strategic right now. Greenland is covered with Russian and Chinese ships all over the place.”

“We need Greenland from the standpoint of national security, and Denmark is not going to be able to do it,” the president said.
