Your MesaZona blogger first met this guy sitting with Mark Svoboda at a table shortly after Slickable's Ice Cream Shop opened on Main Street while they were talking about organizational details for the perennially-popular MACFest Arts & Crafts Festival that's attracted thousands of people to downtown Mesa over the years. . . just one of those many chance encounters that happen all the time here in the New Urban Downtown Mesa?
It happened again about a year later when Steven recruited yours truly to be a volunteer, then again months later at a Creative Place Making workshop staged at Mesa Arts Center.
A former Marine interested in Creative Place Making?
We exchanged brief words last year during some on-the-street impromptu photo sessions covering downtown activities, but never had the opportunity to talk more about his leadership training activities. Just a couple of days ago, thumbing through the Voter Education Guide for The General Election Nov 8, 2016 there's Steven Adkins [I didn't even know his last name since we were on a first-name basis only] at the top of page 15 CANDIDATES FOR STATE REPRESENTATIVE - DISTRICT 26.
Unlike some elected officials - or for that matter candidates who want to get elected to public officec- Steven takes a strong stand on many issues: State budget, job growth, the economy, abortion, education, immigration and welfare.

According to Ballotpedia.com Steven Adkins ran unopposed in the Arizona House of Representatives District 26 Republican Primary.

Bio
Steven D. Adkins was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. He has been married to Fernanda (Fern) Adkins since March 7th, 2010.Their first son, Logan Adkins was born on August 3rd, 2016. Steven is a second generation American, with his parents and grandparents emigrating from a poor town in Mexico. Growing up in Los Angeles he dealt with racism, gang violence, and hunger and by the age of 15 he was kicked out onto the streets. Despite the odds, he graduated from high school with honors, moved to Arizona to earn 2 degrees, and has served our country in the United States Marine Corps. After Serving 5 years in the United State Marine Corps, he bought a house in Mesa, Arizona. Today he owns a Leadership Development business, volunteers over 200 hrs a yr as an Operations Manager for local events in Mesa, is a district 26 Precinct Committeeman, a house committeeman for the Veterans of Foreign Wars post 3513, and is working towards a 3rd degree, all while running for Arizona House of Representatives District 26.
