Trump’s Lawsuit to Keep His Tax Returns Secret Is Unbelievably Silly

"Every president over the last 40 years, by custom, has published his tax returns so the public can be aware of conflicts of interest. The House of Representatives has the legal right to obtain tax returns for any individual, and has exercised this right in the past, including against officials in the Executive branch. Additionally, the state of New York passed a law compelling cooperation with the release of any tax returns requested by Congress, adding a second layer of clarity to an already iron-clad law.

President Trump has filed suit to prevent the handover of his tax returns.

The lawsuit is not good.

Reading over the document, it is astonishing to believe its authors attended law school.

It should be written in crayon. . . "

Trump sues to block Democrats from getting New York tax returns they haven’t asked for

The president does like his lawsuits.

New York is doing its best to make it possible for Congress to get its hands on President Donald Trump’s state tax returns. Will it work? That’s an open question. It’s not even clear House Democrats are going to ask for them, let alone how it would play out in the courts if they did. The president is preemptively filing a lawsuit to block them from even trying.

On Tuesday, Trump filed a lawsuit against the House Ways and Means Committee, New York Attorney General Letitia James, and New York Tax Commissioner Michael Schmidt to try to block them from releasing his state tax returns. The suit lands just two weeks after New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill that would allow three congressional tax committees to request state income tax returns and reports from the New York State Commissioner of the Department of Taxation and Finance.

While the change could, presumably, apply to many government officials, it is aimed at one individual in particular: Donald Trump.

“This bill gives Congress the ability to fulfill its Constitutional responsibilities, strengthen our democratic system and ensure that no one is above the law,” Gov. Cuomo said in a statement upon signing the bill
