CNBC Live Upsates: Zelenskyy sacks UK Ambassador Vadym Prystaiko after Media Comments; U.S. says Ukraine now using Cluster Bombs

Intro: Putin accuses the West of stoking the "flames of war" ..."It's a broader point about how there are there politicians in certain countries, like the US, that aren't universally supportive of the war - and that perhaps the Ukrainians need to be a bit more diplomatically savvy when they're interacting with them.

"But the fact that this has triggered an avalanche, potentially leading to the sacking of Ukraine's ambassador, is pretty extraordinary."

More reaction to Vadym Prystaiko's sacking as Ukrainian ambassador to the UK has come from former prime minister Boris Johnson...The UN Security Council will hold its latest briefing on the situation in Ukraine at 2pm today (GMT).

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday announced the dismissal of ambassador to the U.K. Vadym Prystaiko after he called comments Zelenskyy made about the U.K. defense minister unhealthy.
  • Zelenskyy issued a presidential order that did not specify a reason.
In other news, Russian missile and drone strikes on southern Ukraine and port areas continued for a fourth night Thursday, according to Ukrainian authorities, as the White House confirmed Ukraine has begun using U.S.-supplied cluster bombs in its defensive operations in Russia-occupied areas.
  • National security spokesperson John Kirby told reporters the U.S. had received feedback that the munitions, which arrived from the U.S. last week, were being used “effectively.”
  • In his daily address, Zelenskyy said nearly 70 missiles were fired at Odesa, Donetsk, Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia, Zhytomyr and Kharkiv this week.
Since Monday, concerns have been growing over global food supplies following Russia’s suspension of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which has provided a key export route since July 2022.
Wheat prices have moved sharply higher as the European Union’s foreign policy chief warned the move could imperil global food security.

And on Tuesday, Russia’s Defense Ministry said it was carrying out a “mass retaliatory strike” for an attack on the Crimean bridge early Monday which it blamed on Ukraine.
  • Tensions are also mounting in the Black Sea after Russia said it would consider all vessels sailing toward Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea as military cargo carriers.
  • Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said it “may” do the same from midnight Friday. It has not yet provided an update."

Ukraine war latest: Zelenskyy sacks Vadym Prystaiko as ambassador to UK; Putin claims part of Poland was 'gift of Stalin' to country

Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismisses Mr Prystaiko as Ukraine's ambassador to the UK days after he criticised the president on Sky News. Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin accuses the West of stoking the "flames of war" and claims Poland has forgotten the western part of the country is a "gift of Stalin".

Russia is 'systematically destroying everything' for Odesa's grain exports

Let's return to a fourth consecutive night of missile attacks on grain infrastructure in and around Odesa.

As we reported at 8.10am, two people were injured and 120 tonnes of peas and barley were destroyed at the site of an agriculture company in the Odesa region.

It's the latest in a series of attacks on grain stores that have destroyed at least 60,000 tonnes of produce.

Military analyst Sean Bell gave his take on why Russia might be doing it.

"The grain deal expired a few days ago, and ever since, the Russians have been pounding away every night.

"American intelligence suggests Russians are now mining the port area again.

"The Russians are saying: 'if you give us what we want, we'll be happy to open it up again.' Yet they're systematically destroying everything.

"The other thing is about this is timing. July and August is traditionally the time of the harvest.

"That's when Ukraine would have the most grain. So it's designed to most do the most damage."

Aftermath of this morning's attack in the Odesa region

"What looks far more likely with this is that Russia also exports a lot of grain.

"By reducing the supply, he's increasing the prices and Russia will be able to exploit that.

"The irony, of course, is that it's the poorest in the world that will suffer. That is who President Putin claimed he was trying to help.

"In reality, the African countries - who largely support him - then find things very difficult.

"It looks like a very, very cynical view on behalf of Russia... and it'll have global implications."
