Apartment List Renter Migration Report: 2024

January 22, 2024

Hey Tim,

Apartment List has published its newest Renter Migration Report. In it, you will find an interactive map displaying search patterns for millions of Apartment List users. Our data aligns with census estimates showing that migration in the U.S. slowed last year, but certain metro-to-metro trends remain strong, highlighting the markets that will be attracting (or losing) renters in the coming year.
Best,
Erin Giddens

Key insights from this year’s report include:
  • In Phoenix metro, 26% of users are searching for apartments in a different metropolitan area. The most popular destinations are Tucson, Las Vegas, and Albuquerque.
  • In the other direction, 26% of renters looking for apartments in Phoenix are searching from out-of-town. The greatest search interest is coming from Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Tucson.
  • The coming year is expected to be relatively mild for the rental market, but the data highlight strong migration channels from high-cost to low-cost regions, which could sustain upward pressure on rents in more affordable markets.
