On Feb. 11, one day after ProPublica published its article, a Forest
Service cache manager — an official who oversees a gear repository —
wrote in an email that he asked colleagues to distribute widely, “I
received notice from the Washington Office Cache Management staff late
last night that we are to place a hold on issuing” the pants.
- But the
agency didn’t immediately clarify further.
A wildland firefighter who
spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect their employment said
last week that incident management teams had been asking the agency for
advice about the pants.
“As of right now, our logistics folks haven’t
gotten any guidance at all from higher-ups,” ----the firefighter said
Officials
at the agency knew about the use of potentially dangerous “forever
chemicals” in protective gear years before publicly acknowledging the
issue, according to emails obtained by ProPublica. |
