New Digs For Potato Barn Opens In Southeast Mesa: Store #3

Here is a Press Release with a story from the City of Mesa Newsroom
Potato Barn opens its largest store in Gateway area of Mesa
May 10, 2019 at 6:58 pm
A few decades ago, Greg Bongiorno drove into the City of Mesa with little to no money in his pockets. From 1979 until 2002, Greg owned and operated a handful of furniture stores in the valley. In the summer of 2002, Greg Bongiorno took over an old potato barn building in Higley, AZ and turned into his unique home furnishings dream.
"We were crazy enough to open a store in the middle of nowhere in a broken-down barn." says Mike Bongiorno (manager of the Scottsdale location and Greg's son).
That broken down barn helped lead the way for shoppers looking for one-of-a-kind pieces and unique furniture are sure to find the style that fits their home. As soon as they step foot inside the new 100,000 square foot store, shoppers will certainly find something unique to fall in love with.
"Some pieces are really old and vintage here.
Some are replicas, and then we have the industrial, modern, farmhouse and intentionally rustic items for those looking for something a little more unique."
"In 2002, my dad found an old abandoned building alongside some railroad tracks near Gilbert. That barn had, for years, been with packed potatoes, to be shipped and loaded onto the trains that pulled right up next to the building. My dad's idea was to bring in some 'cool, unique pieces that are affordable and people will love.'"
That idea has since grown over the last 17 years, allowing Potato Barn to evolve from a tiny old barn in Higley to three thriving stores here in the valley; Scottsdale, Chandler, and now Mesa.
Along with the local community, Mayor John Giles and Councilman Kevin Thompson will be in attendance for a special ribbon cutting ceremony early evening, Friday, May 10th at the new Mesa store.
"Potato Barn is a great addition to our community and a perfect fit for our fast growing residential areas in southeast Mesa," Mayor John Giles said. "Watching Arizona businesses grow locally and create jobs is very rewarding and I wish Potato Barn the best of success."
Councilman Thompson seconds that sentiment, "I am happy Potato Barn chose Mesa and the Ray Road Corridor in particular as their new home. They are a welcome addition to District 6 and the City of Mesa and I am looking forward to watching them continue their success while growing and expanding."
With cooperation from the City of Mesa, the planning and permitting process for the new 100,000 square foot store was a smooth process.
Construction started in April 2018 and was completed in March 2019.
Under the supervision of Sigma Contracting, over 400 tradesmen and women worked on the project. The new store is off of Ray Rd., east of Power and west of Hawes.
 II. Grand Opening
Potato Barn welcomes all to the Grand Opening event on Saturday, May 11th. For those in attendance there will be food trucks, live music, and a chance to win gift cards.
 III. The Key Players
The new build of the 100,000 square foot store is possible thanks to a group of key players. They helped keep the project moving smoothly.

It's tonight on 2nd Fridays here in Downtown Mesa: May 10 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

I would like to express appreciation to the Visitors Desk at the South Entrance on Hibbert Street for the welcome hospitality and the courtesy of a guided walk-around tour of the Ground Floor and 2nd Floor Exhibition areas just about two hours ago.
Come see what BenU Mesa students are producing in their arts classes and what the school has to offer in terms of arts education at the university level. Guests will also get a chance to meet the artists, enjoy refreshments, and purchase artwork.
Each year I am amazed at the breadth and quality of our student work. It’s great to see the students enter the professional world by exhibiting and selling their original art,” says Fine Arts Professor, Michael Tole.
Works at the exhibit include some examples inserted here
painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, digital art, graphic design work, short videos, and a sharing of the university’s arts and literary magazine, Around the Ben,
published in December of 2018.
They are just a few examples selected from Manifest 225 that begin to show you some of the talent for BenU students who are entering the professional world.

This is the fifth iteration of the end of year exhibit, Manifest 225.

In its sixth year of operation, BenU Mesa offers several art related degree programs:
BFA in Studio Art
BA degrees in Communication Arts and Graphic Design.

Is the National Rifle Association imploding? As the nation grieves over another deadly school shooting, we turn to look at how internal turmoil inside the NRA threatens the future of the gun lobbying group. A major new report published by The Trace in partnership with The New Yorker finds that while the NRA has blamed its recent financial woes on left-wing attacks on the Second Amendment, the real damage to the organization comes from within. Chief among the NRA’s problems is its three-decade-old relationship with Oklahoma-based public relations firm Ackerman McQueen. The firm, which is behind the NRA’s imaging, messaging and most of its initiatives, was paid more than $40 million dollars in 2017. We speak to Mike Spies, staff writer at The Trace.#DemocracyNow #NRA #SecondAmendment

Mesa City Council Study Session + Regular Meeting Thu 09 May 2019

After the momentous - missing Mesa Mayor John Giles as the presiding officer - Monday May 6th City Council public meetings that attracted a record-breaking over 560 views on the streaming video uploaded to YouTube, two meetings three days later didn't garner that many views, but the Study Session yesterday deserves more attention than the usual handful from the public - it's a lot of hard work presented by Liz Morales. The Regular Meeting received over 190 views.
But let's take a first look at Monday's meeting first . . .
________________________________________________________________________
Please take the time to notice which elected members of the Mesa City Council (and those salaried City Hall employees who are required to sit around the tables) speak up and what they have to say on any of the many items in presentations heard, what is discussed between them, and in what direction the discussions are going if they get individual attention or get approved in one motion when they stay on the Consent Agenda.
Here's that - in the absence of Mayor John Giles - another meeting presided over by Vice Mayor Mark Freeman.
Is that a sign of things to come for who might be aspiring to be the next mayor?
D6 Councilmember Kevin Thompson is absent also.
