New Children's Library Opens Inside Main Library in Downtown Mesa

A new and much more extensive Children's Library is now open at Main Library, 64 E. First St., for kids and adults to enjoy. A voter-approved bond issue funded the new children's reading and play spaces inspired by Arizona wildlife.

"The new Children's Library is a tremendous addition to the Mesa Main Library with many features that are both educational and fun for the entire family," said Mayor John Giles. "I'm proud of our Library staff for having the vision to create this area. We are very grateful to Mesa voters for making this dream come true."

Features include a story time stage, early childhood development area, event room, reading nooks, video projection games and adult-size and child-size entrances sculpted to look like Arizona rock formations.

"The new Children's Library is truly a point of pride for Mesa. It is colorful, and all of the exciting new features will really make reading fun and ignite children's imaginations," said Vice Mayor Jenn Duff. "It will truly be a place where both children and parents can bond, learn and create memories."

Colorful artwork centered on Arizona wildlife adorns the Children's Library, including murals by local artists Koryn Woodward Wasson and Thomas "Breeze" Marcus. Photos from Arizona Game and Fish complement the space. The floor has animal tracks that lead you to the event room, lots of inspiring books, and other engaging new features.

"This is the biggest renovation at the Main Library since 1998. More than providing a wow factor for our visitors, it enhances the library experience for children," said Heather Wolf, Mesa Public Library Director. "This was truly a team effort from the Library staff and our partners to make this a reality."

Funding for the new Children's Library is from the Parks and Culture Bonds issue approved by Mesa voters in 2018.

Tom Tomorrow’s weekly cartoon, This Modern World, appears online at The Nation, Daily Kos, and The Nib, and in approximately 80 papers across the country. His cartoons have also been featured in The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Nation, U.S. News & World Report, Esquire, The Economist, and numerous other publications.

He is a 2015 Pulitzer Prize finalist and the 2013 Herblock Prize winner. He was awarded the first place Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for Cartooning in 1998 and again in 2003 and is also a recipient of the Aaronsen award and a Society of Illustrators silver medal, among other honors. He is the author of ten cartoon anthologies and one children’s book, and in 2009 collaborated with the band Pearl Jam to create the artwork for their album, Backspacer. He is currently at work preparing for an absurdly ambitious Kickstarter project, with which he hopes to mark the 25th anniversary of TMW in print.

"Bucket, spade, sun hat and a can of spray paint: the essential holiday kit if you are one of the world’s most famous artists – the elusive Banksy.

The graffiti artist from Bristol, whose work now sells for millions of pounds, has confirmed this weekend that he is responsible for the appearance of several new works dotted across seaside resorts on the east coast of England.

Speculation has already been rife that Banksy was the man behind an entertaining outbreak of fresh graffiti images, which include a seagull hovering over oversized “chips” – made from insulation material – in a skip and a rat relaxing in a deckchair with a cocktail. . .

More Now an Instagram video clip has been released, making the provenance clear. The footage, which is just over three minutes long, is called A Great British Spraycation, and shows the artist – identity as ever obscured – taking a summer road trip in a beaten-up camper van with cans of paint stashed inside a cooler.

In a nostalgic gesture towards the prosperous history of England’s declining seaside resorts, the artist has also painted a dancing couple in black and white on the roof of a bus shelter. The pair appear to move to the music produced by an accordion player in a flat cap.

In recent years, Banksy has moved closer towards overt political commentary in his art – campaigning on the poor treatment of migrants, his opposition to Brexit and radical Islamic discourse. He has also criticised the priorities of the international fine art market. . .
