WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Marcia L. Fudge and Deputy Secretary Adrianne Todman participated in a number of housing and community development related events throughout the past week. Secretary Fudge amplified the Biden-Harris Administration’s Build Back Better agenda and its investments in housing, including rehabilitation and sustainability, resilience, economic development, and community revitalization. Deputy Secretary Todman surveyed disaster recovery efforts funded with Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) resources. They visited Oakland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego, California; San Juan and Caguas, Puerto Rico; and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Secretary Fudge Travels to California to Amplify Build Back Better agenda

 

Secretary Fudge traveled to San Diego on Monday, October 18 to deliver the keynote address at the Mortgage Bankers Association Annual Convention to amplify HUD’s efforts to expand affordable homeownership opportunities and advance racial equity in our housing market.

On Sunday, October 17, the Secretary traveled to Los Angeles to attend the Milken Global Institute Conference and take part in conversations with leaders in government and the financial services sector. Secretary Fudge highlighted the Biden-Harris Administration’s efforts to address our homelessness crisis, expand America’s supply of affordable housing, combat climate change, and enforce our nation’s fair housing laws.

 

Prior to those engagements, Secretary Fudge traveled to Oakland on Thursday, October 14 and to San Francisco, California on Friday, October 15 for Build Back Better events.  

 

While in Oakland and San Francisco, the Secretary spoke with residents and visited affordable living communities and amplified the significant investments to housing construction and rehabilitation, community revitalization, and economic development included in the Biden-Harris Administration’s Build Back Better agenda.

Secretary Fudge was joined by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, U.S. Representative Barbara Lee, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf and San Francisco Mayor London Breed among other elected, local, and community leaders. The Secretary’s trip coverage includes: California Playbook, SF Gate, KTVU, CBS San Francisco, Local News Matters, and the San Francisco Examiner.

 

 

Deputy Secretary Todman Travels to U.S. Virgin Islands to Discuss Disaster Relief and Recovery

Deputy Secretary Todman traveled to St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) on Friday, October 15 to survey the island’s disaster recovery efforts, see progress being made toward the USVI’s Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Relief (CDBG-DR) Action Plan goals, and underscore the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to the islands’ full recovery and renewal from weather-related disasters.

While in the USVI, the Deputy Secretary met with Governor Albert Byran Jr.,Virgin Islands Housing Finance Authority (VIHFA) Executive Director Daryl Griffith, VIHFA Chief Disaster Recovery Officer Dayna Clendinen, and VIHFA CDBG-DR Director of Programs Ann Hanley. The Deputy Secretary’s trip coverage includes: The Virgin Islands Daily News, The St. Thomas Source, Virgin Islands Free Press, and the Virgin Islands Consortium.

Deputy Secretary Todman Travels to Puerto Rico to Survey Disaster Relief and Recovery Efforts

Deputy Secretary Todman traveled to San Juan and Caguas, Puerto Rico on Wednesday, October 13 to survey the island’s disaster recovery efforts, see progress being made toward Puerto Rico’s Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Relief (CDBG-DR) Action Plan goals, and underscore the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to the island’s full recovery and renewal.

While in Puerto Rico, the Deputy Secretary met with Governor Pedro Pierluisi, Puerto Rico Resident Commissioner and U.S. Congresswoman Jennifer González-Colón, and Puerto Rico Secretary of Housing William Rodríguez. The Deputy Secretary’s trip was covered by El Nuevo Día (The New Day), the Weekly Journal, WAPA-TV, Metro PR, and El Vocero.

On November 1st, we release the 2021 Social Progress Index. Humanity is dealing with some of the biggest challenges ever faced, from the fallout of the pandemic to the impact of climate change. In the interest of never letting a good crisis go to waste, we need to take this opportunity to rebuild the world we want, a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable one. In most areas, the world has never been this advanced, but in a few areas of social progress such as personal rights and inclusiveness, the past few years have seen us take a backslide, and the advent of Covid-19 has put even more in jeopardy from education to healthcare, to deeper societal divisions and beyond. This year's Social Progress Index will reveal how countries across the world are doing in light of the many challenges we all face. Our rich publicly available data set allows you to look at which countries are doing better than others and in what areas, so we can figure out what is working and where we need to focus our efforts. This year we will also release a report with the Social Progress Index that focuses on the complex relationship between social progress, development, and greenhouse gas emissions. As world leaders gather for the crucial COP26 Summit in Glasgow, a roadmap and data-driven strategy that shows us what actually works has never been more needed.
