Trump's defeat in Iran and its worldwide consequences

What started as a massive gamble on the part of Trump, drunk on the immediate success of his Venezuela raid and foolish enough to believe Netanyahu’s wild claims of a quick, epoch-making victory in a three-day war, will be seen in retrospect not only as a crucial turning point in the unraveling of the Trump presidency, but also as a key development in the decline of US imperialism.

Trump’s defeat in Iran and its worldwide consequences

The war in Iran, which started as a reckless gamble on the part of Trump, is developing into a significant strategic defeat for US imperialism, which can have important consequences for the world economy, the position of America as a world power, and world relations in general.

We are now in the seventh week of the US-Israeli war of aggression against Iran. The US has been unable to achieve any of its aims, and, in fact, it has become clear that it is not in a position to achieve them. . .

ARRIVING TODAY: Massive Attack and Tom Waits Team Up for “Boots on the Ground

Massive Attack and Tom Waits have shared a new collaborative single entitled “Boots on the Ground,” which marks the first new Massive Attack music distributed under what they’re referring to as a Spotify exemption policy. It’s also Waits’ first original music in 15 years and the first new tune from Massive Attack in six years.

The protest anthem comes with a spoken-word B-side from Waits entitled “The Fly,” as well as additional spoken-word reflections from the Egyptian-Canadian-American writer Omar El Akkad that will arrive tomorrow, April 17.

“It’s a career honor to collaborate with an artist of the magnitude, originality and integrity of Tom, but this track is arriving in an atmosphere of chaos,” Massive Attack shared of the collaboration. “Across the western hemisphere, state authoritarianism and the militarization of police forces are fusing again with neo-fascist politics. Seen within the American emergency, at home and overseas, this track contains pulses of callous impulse & abandoned mind.”

Added Waits: “One day many years ago I accepted an invitation from Massive Attack to collaborate. Way back then, we sent them ‘Boots on the Ground.’ Their long release delay never worried me. Today, as in all of mankind’s yesterdays, guarantees this song will never go out of style. Man’s fiasco folly is a feast for the flies. Hence, the B side of Massive Attack’s upcoming 12 inch ‘The Fly’ features my appreciation for the winged nuisance.”

The single comes with a film made by Massive Attack in collaboration with the photographer thefinaleye. You can pre-order the 12-inch of “Boots on the Ground” here,

Lyrics: Big legs dangle from a helicopter hole Big chug rhythm it’s gotta be now ho! Brown, mean and young Dumb and full of cum What can you use a marine for This is a fucking ass machine gun war With your boots on the ground Boots on the ground Boots on the ground Boots on the ground We trim your hedges, we fight your wars Wait in the trenches, and we fuck ‘til we’re sore Boots on the ground Boots on the ground Born shiny bullets in an army of ants Blow that horn, we sleep in our pants Big titties, big titties Well we holler and we burn down cities Boots on the ground Boots on the ground Shootin up the town Stayin in the hole until Jimmy Hoffa is found With my boots on the ground Well something goes tink when the cartridge is spent Where do you think all your cartilage went Boots on the ground Boots on the ground Now who the hell are these federal pricks? Hiding in the senate like a bloated ass tick Air conditioned fuckstick loafers Sittin in a room full of army posters A coal to a diamond, a vote into law They Campaign up all the blood they can draw Mold your world, a soldier’s just clay How much does every soldier weigh? Cut you off at the ankles and they throw that away Boots on the ground It’s cold and hot, as Satan’s .hoof Spinning on the world I’m hiding on a roof I kill a brown man I never ass knew Choked on spit and then he turned blue He spattered black blood, he rolled fin out He died right here I got the pearl from his snout A puff of gray smoke from the tongue of a cloud He rotted in the sand and all that they found was his boots on the ground, boots on the ground, boots on the ground All that they found was his boots on the ground, boots on the ground

THE STRUGGLE ISRAEL

Time is running out in Donald Trump’s two-week ceasefire with Iran, as diplomats scramble to avoid further attacks. Lives — and the global economy — are on the line.

  • Plenty of things have made President Donald Trump’s ceasefire with Iran look precarious. Among the big ones: Israel’s refusal to stop bombing Lebanon as it targets Hezbollah militants. But that obstacle at least temporarily disappeared today, in a cautiously hopeful sign of diplomatic progress with Iran.

  • A ceasefire deal between Israel and Lebanon came together after Trump spoke with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump wrote on social media this morning. The 10-day ceasefire began at 5 p.m. Eastern today.

  • The temporary deal counts as a small, but significant, diplomatic win — if it holds. Yet the pause in fighting also shows just how fraught the next stage of talks aimed at ending the war with Iran could be. The players, and the motives, in this dynamic remain incredibly complex.

The stakes of securing peace with Iran are getting higher every day.

  • The U.S. will resume bombing Iran if the country doesn’t “choose wisely” in peace talks, War Secretary Pete Hegseth told reporters this morning.

  • Trump, however, was full of sunny optimism about prospects for a deal; he suggested that the next round of in-person talks could happen this weekend. But American and Iranian negotiators are reportedly scaling back the ambitions of a comprehensive peace agreement, instead seeking a “temporary memorandum” to prevent future fights, Reuters writes. Some gulf and European leaders think a serious deal could take six months, Bloomberg reported.

  • The effects of the war on the global economy could become more severe soon. Europe only has about six weeks left of jet fuel because of oil shortages caused by the war in Iran, International Energy Agency head Fatih Birol told the Associated Press. “In the past there was a group called ‘Dire Straits.’ It’s a dire strait now,” he said. “It is going to have major implications for the global economy. And the longer it goes, the worse it will be for the economic growth and inflation around the world.”

Trump wants to declare victory. But the road to lasting peace could be long and complicated.

Eligible Mesa Electric customers could save up to $70 on electric bills this summer. The City of Mesa Energy Resources Department's Summer Electric Assistance program (SEA) is accepting applications on a first-come, first-served basis for residential customers who demonstrate a financial need.

SEA is a residential utility assistance program available to current City of Mesa residential electric customers whose total household income is less than $36,958 per year. The program eliminates Mesa's monthly service and usage charges for the first 80 kilowatt hours to help eligible customers cope with higher electric summer bills. At current rates, participants can expect to save up to $24.50 per month on their July, August and September bills. SRP customers are not eligible to participate in Mesa's SEA program.

Eligible Mesa Electric Customers are encouraged to apply before May 28. Applications will not be accepted after Aug. 1. More information is available on the SEA webpage about eligibility and how to apply.

There are several other programs to help income eligible Mesa residents with utility payments and other assistance, including LISR (Limited Income Senior Rate Program), which offers a 30 percent discount on water bills to those 60 and older on a limited income. Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES) is offering a new statement program, Power AZ, that expands access to utility assistance to more Arizona households. It uses the same application as the federal Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) found on the DES website. Efficiency Arizona is a rebate program for qualified households to install highly efficient appliances and HVAC equipment to improve energy efficiency, home comfort and save on energy bills.

More information about limited income assistance programs is available on the City of Mesa website.
