"A gunman opened fire at an outlet mall in the Dallas suburb of Allen, Texas, over the weekend, leaving eight people dead and seven more injured. The mass shooting was the second-deadliest in the U.S. this year.
This attack came after several major shootings shook the country this year, including the killing of three children and three adults at an elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee in March, and a shooting at a dance hall in Monterey Park, California that killed 11 in January.
There have been 202 mass shootings across the U.S. so far this year, more than any other year when compared with the same period, and more than one per day in average, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as an incident where four or more people, not including the shooter, are injured or killed.
Mass shootings have been on the rise in recent years. In 2022, 647 such incidents occurred, down from a year before but higher than any other year since the Gun Violence Archive started tracking in 2014.
A total of 6,404 deaths and 11,846 injuries have been recorded due to gun violence this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
