Monday Forecast:

Ozone

97 AQI
Max 8-hr Avg: 69 ppb

Forecast Discussion:

Ozone over the weekend in Phoenix did see the USG AQI category on Friday as expected, but also reaching similar levels yesterday. Stronger southeasterly winds persisted during the morning and early afternoon hours, however plenty of ozone was still out there as levels across the state continued to remain elevated, even as an active weather pattern made its way into the region.

The atmosphere over the southwestern U.S. is going to be quite busy over the coming week. A 'monsoon-like' pattern has set up over Arizona and will funnel moisture out of the southeast and into the eastern half of the state. Afternoon pop-up showers and thunderstorms are expected. Most of these storms will be dry, bringing the potential for outflows and elevated PM10 (dust) in certain areas.

By Thursday, a shortwave to the south will bring in more moisture to southern and central AZ, likely resulting more widespread rain showers.

Tomorrow is looking to be the most active day for Phoenix, with possible blowing dust in the evening from dry pop-up thunderstorms in the vicinity. However, chances for blowing dust is possible for each evening this week on the east side of the valley.

As for air quality, ozone will remain in the upper-Moderate AQI for the rest of the week. Levels will be dependent on how active the weather is in the afternoon and evening, with lower ozone during more active periods. PM10 is expected to come in the Moderate AQI with morning local activity and the blowing dust potential in the evenings. PM2.5 (smoke) will follow similar trends to PM10.

Air Quality Status Map

This map displays the NowCast AQI values, which are short-term air pollution averages (one-hour) that can reflect changing air quality conditions. The NowCast AQI uses the same color and scale as the AQI and can provide a rough estimate of how hour-to-hour pollution levels compare to 8- or 24-hour EPA health standards. NowCast AQI values change rapidly and should not be confused with official daily air pollution averages. These changing values can be used to help determine if the current hour is a good time for outdoor activities.

Rapid Response Notification System

You can help to maintain compliance with air quality standards by signing up for notification of a Rapid Response event.

When dust pollution levels begin to rise, the Air Quality department will send you a message notifying you of where the pollution hot spot is and what steps you will need to do to help prevent an exceedance of the health standard. For more information, view the Rapid Response Notifications page.
