Ozone was able to exceed the federal health standard yesterday at four monitors in the Phoenix Valley. PM10 (dust) and PM2.5 (smoke) easily stayed in the Good Air Quality Index (AQI) category.
Looking ahead for this week, ozone will continue to be the main pollutant of interest. Today through at least Tuesday, favorable weather conditions will be in place for the local build-up of ozone. That is, sunny skies and light winds will allow ozone to increase. As such, an Ozone High Pollution Advisory (HPA) is in effect for today, and we will extend the HPA into Monday as well. Moreover, we will go ahead and issue an Ozone High Pollution Watch (HPW) for Tuesday.
Just in case-an Ozone HPA means that ozone has a high probability of exceeding the federal health standard. An Ozone HPW means that there is a potential for ozone to exceed the health standard, and it may be upgraded to an HPA if conditions hold.
After Tuesday however, a low pressure wave from the Pacific Ocean will press into our region and increase winds out of the south. This new pattern will help to disperse ozone in the Valley. Therefore, ozone levels are forecast to be lower on Wednesday and Thursday, though still in the Moderate AQI category.
Lastly, in regards to PM, both PM10 and PM2.5 will be mostly locally driven today through Tuesday. Then on Wednesday, afternoon winds could result in pockets of dust for dust-prone areas. As typical though, industrial areas south of the Phoenix metro should see the highest PM levels (forecast graphs reflect these areas).
Check back tomorrow for the latest!
