German Government Drops
to New Record Low in Poll
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz delivers anti-Russian tirade at the United Nations
Scholz condemned those who call for an “immediate ceasefire” in the Ukraine war. Rather, the German chancellor cynically declared, “Peace without freedom is oppression. Peace without justice is a diktat.”
Such language actually describe the crimes of Nazi Germany in the Second World War, which waged a racially-motivated vernichtungskrieg, or war of extermination, involving the deliberate starvation and mass murder of civilian populations, accompanied by the extermination of Eastern Europe’s Jewish population.
In a 1963 speech at Georgetown University, US President John F. Kennedy described the effect of the Second World War on the Soviet Union. “At least 20 million lost their lives,” he said. “Countless millions of homes and farms were burned or sacked. A third of the nation’s territory, including nearly two-thirds of its industrial base, was turned into a wasteland—a loss equivalent to the devastation of this country east of Chicago.”
- Even amid the Cold War, the leader of American imperialism felt obligated to acknowledge the extraordinary toll of the war on the Soviet Union.
A mood of crisis
- The "debt brake" limiting state expenditure is enshrined in the constitution is creating additional pressure in the coalition.
- The FDP does not want to incur any new debts from 2024.
- This is to be achieved through massive budget cuts while raising taxes for the rich is out of the question for the liberals.
Satisfaction in German government plummets
Despite efforts to project unity, Germany's ruling coalition is failing to win back the approval of voters, according to the latest "Deutschlandtrend" survey published Thursday (31.8.).
The latest figures show record lows for Chancellor Olaf Scholz's government, while the opposition conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) as well as the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) continue their upward trend.
It's the lowest Deutschlandtrend satisfaction rating for the German government since the coalition began work in December 2021. . .The initial euphoria with which the unprecedented alliance took over the government in December 2021 has given way to disillusionment. The notion that different political beliefs can be put aside for the sake of a common goal has proven to be a fallacy in everyday government life.
