Slava Ukraini! In early 2022 I began a Telegram channel aggregating news from a number of sources daily on the war in Ukraine. Since June 2023 I have provided a daily draft for the Ukraine War Brief Podcast collecting news from over 60 sources daily, much of which forms the basis of the script. While the Podcast is on hiatus I will make this Draft available here both on my own Substack and The People’s Media for those who wish to keep up with events on a daily basis.

The EU Commision supports the start of negotiation for EU accession for Ukraine

On June 7, the European Commission supported the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union, said Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal. Radio Free Europe reports

“We are grateful for the positive assessment of our European integration progress. The voiced conclusion of the EC states that Ukraine is continuing its systemic efforts to join the EU and has implemented all four additional reform steps”, said the Prime Minister.

He further said that Kyiv now expects the next step from European partners – to start negotiations on EU membership this month.

“The Ukrainian people daily vote for the right to be in the circle of the European family in the war against the Russian aggressor.” he added.

Formerly media reported with reference to informed interlocutors that the European Commission had concluded that Ukraine and Moldova “were sufficiently prepared” for the formal start of negotiations on accession to the European Union. In particular, the commission confirmed to the EU ambassadors that Ukraine had fully implemented four, and Moldova – needed all three reform steps to start negotiations.

NEWS WORLDWIDE

Macron on sending instructors to Ukraine: We want to have a coalition, many of our partners agree.

French President Emmanuel Macron said that sending French instructors to Ukraine to train Ukrainian military personnel will not in any way affect the escalation of the war, in addition, many of the allies have already agreed to expand such a coalition.

"As for instructors on Ukrainian territory: we talked about this on February 26, if you remember. I note that President Zelenskyy and his Minister of Defense expressed very clearly the needs of Ukraine. Ukraine today is mobilizing much more people and they will need to be recruited. There will be dozens thousands of new soldiers. And it is much more effective and practical, under certain conditions, to form people on Ukrainian territory," Macron said at a press conference with Zelenskyy in Paris on Friday.

At the same time, he emphasised that France is not at war with Russia.

"We don't want escalation, but we want to do everything in our power to help Ukraine resist. Therefore, when Ukraine asks us to train its mobilised soldiers on its sovereign territory, is this escalation? No. This is not sending European soldiers or allies to the front line. This is recognizing Ukrainian sovereignty on its territory," the French president added.

Macron also noted that on the issue of sending foreign instructors to Ukraine to train military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, he would like to have a coalition. "And many of our partners have already given their consent," he said.

Ukraine Shoots Down russian Kh-101 Cruise Missile with Cluster Warhead for the First Time

On the night of June 7, the russian occupying forces launched five Kh-101/Kh-555 cruise missiles from Tu-95 MS bombers during another strike on Ukraine's critical infrastructure. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, all five missiles were shot down by air defence forces. The enemy also deployed 53 Shahed-type attack drones, 48 of which were shot down. Defense Express wrote.

At the same time, as it turned out, on the night of June 7, Ukrainian air defence units shot down a Kh-101 cruise missile with a cluster warhead for the first time, as reported by a Ukrainian Armed Forces officer in the Polkovnyk GSh (Colonel of the General Staff) Telegram channel.

"In this version, the first warhead of the Kh-101 remained fragmentation-explosive, while the second became a cluster warhead," the report states.

One can assume that the enemy will use missiles with such warheads primarily to target airfields.

It is currently unknown how actively the enemy is using these missiles for terrorist attacks on Ukraine, and what the percentage distribution is for the production of missiles with different warheads.

At the same time, let us recall that it became known in March that russia began producing the Kh-101 with two warheads. Earlier, the russian forces also claimed that this cruise missile received an 800-kg warhead by reducing its range.

However, unfortunately, even with such a reduced range, the enemy has enough capability to shell the entire territory of Ukraine.

The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has announced additional security assistance to meet Ukraine's critical security and defense needs. Interfax Ukraine reports

According to an announcement on the Pentagon's website, this announcement is the Biden Administration's 59th tranche of equipment to be provided from DoD inventories for Ukraine since August 2021.

"This Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA) package, which has an estimated value of $225 million, will provide Ukraine additional capabilities to meet its most urgent battlefield needs, such as: air defense interceptors; artillery systems and munitions; armored vehicles; and anti-tank weapons," it said.

The capabilities in this announcement include: missiles for HAWK air defense systems; Stinger anti-aircraft missiles; ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS); 155mm howitzers; 155mm and 105mm artillery rounds; 81mm mortar systems; M113 armored personnel carriers; trailers to transport heavy equipment; coastal and riverine patrol boats; Tube-Launched, Optically-Tracked, Wire-Guided (TOW) missiles; Javelin and AT-4 anti-armor systems; small arms ammunition and grenades; demolitions munitions; night vision devices; and spare parts, maintenance, and other ancillary equipment.

"The United States will continue to work together with more than 50 Allies and partners to ensure Ukraine's brave defenders receive the critical capabilities needed to fight Russian aggression," the Pentagon said.

The Differences between the Mirage 2000 and Mirage 2000-5

The Mirage 2000, a fourth-generation multirole supersonic jet, was introduced by the French manufacturer Dassault in the 1970s. With over 600 aircraft produced across all variants, it serves nine countries, available in single- and twin-seat variants. The Kyiv Independent reports.

The Mirage 2000-5, introduced in 1999, represents an upgraded version featuring advanced avionics, enhanced firing capabilities for both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, and a modern sensor and control system.

Peter Layton, a visiting fellow at the Griffith Asia Institute and an associate fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), explained the differences to the Kyiv Independent.

“The (Mirage 2000)-5 variant has a high-quality radar, (is) fitted with drop tanks, has a reasonable range, and carries a range of air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons,”

A significant enhancement of the Mirage 2000-5 is the inclusion of the Thomson-CSF Radar Doppler Multi-target (RDY), augmenting its capabilities for deep-strike and close-support missions.

Equipped with a variety of air-to-air missiles and weapons, such as Mica missiles with a range of up to 60 kilometres or older Magic short-range missiles, the Mirage 2000-5 can be configured to meet diverse mission requirements. Its capacity for carrying drop tanks further extends its operational range.

In terms of air-to-ground operations, the Mirage 2000 can deploy various weaponry, including SCALP missiles, previously supplied to Ukraine by France, and guided bombs.

The Mirage 2000-5 can also employ a number of guided bombs, most interestingly the long range AASM Hammer which can also use a rocket assist motor for longer range.
