He rejected proposals for new taxation, such as the “defense tax” proposed by Maxime Prévot of Les Engagés, and indicated the government will rely on debt instruments, state asset sales including shares of BNP Paribas, and spending reductions. 
  • The confirmation of the new aircraft purchase followed a multi-night negotiation session involving parties from across the coalition and is expected to be formally ratified in a future Council of Ministers session.
Belgium's Defence Strategic Plan states that the country will buy an additional 11 US F-35A aircraft, on top of the 34 ordered in 2018
  1. The first four aircraft have already been delivered and will be used to train Belgian pilots in the US. 
  2. The first Belgian F-35s will arrive at the Florennes air base in October.

Belgium has officially confirmed the decision to purchase 11 additional F-35A fighter jets, building on the previous order of 34 aircraft signed in 2018. 

  • The announcement was made by Economy Minister David Clarinval during an interview on July 1, 2025, on La Première, following the federal government’s agreement on a capital gains tax. 
The adoption of the tax ended a political stalemate within the ruling coalition, unblocking several other reform files, including 
  1. labor market reforms,
  2. unemployment benefit restructuring, and 
  3. fiscal policy adjustments.

On July 2, 2025, Japan’s Ministry of Defense held the naming and launching ceremony for the eleventh unit of the Mogami-class frigate series at Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding’s Tamano Shipyard in Okayama Prefecture. The new ship was officially named JS Tatsuta, continuing the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF)’s tradition of naming ships after rivers. Following the launch, JS Tatsuta will proceed to fitting out and sea trials before commissioning into the JMSDF. The ceremony marks another milestone in Japan’s defense policy to field at least twelve units of the class by the end of fiscal year 2027, in line with procurement goals set under the Medium-Term Defense Program.
