Dumbing-Down: How Low Can We Go Here In America.”

Published in 1988, this book created a heated discussion . . .
being able to read [and understand] is one of the biggest "challenges" is as they say "one of the biggest challenges" for Pluralistic Ignorance - surprising to say that Illiteracy is now classified as a Functional Dis-Ability here in America.
But it goes deeper than that when "The Melting Pot" myth has disintegrated with everyone trying to find new identities or hanging-on to the old separate-and-equal false lines of discrimination . . . confirmation-biases where we retreat to tribal enclaves of where we choose to live and who we choose to associate with. We may like our own "comfort zones" but there is no comfort in the fact that we as a nation are more divided than ever before.

EVP Tied to Region’s Growth Over 35 years
By Paul Maryniak, Tribune Executive Editor
April 16,2017
The East Valley in the early 1980s was starkly different from what it is today.
The region was the 90-pound weakling to Phoenix. Major traffic arteries beyond County Club Drive were almost nonexistent. Cities fought over scant opportunities for development. The Pentagon was letting Williams Air Force Base die a slow death.
Amid this bleak and unpromising scene, a small group of business executives began meeting in 1982 at the Mesa Holiday Inn – then an exciting addition to a region dominated by cut-rate motels.
They formed the East Valley Partnership because they saw the region as a land of opportunity unrealized.
Some of those executives gathered two weeks ago at the same Holiday Inn to reminisce over the battles and the struggles that helped make the region what it is today.
Six men and two women who chaired the East Valley Partnership board at various times over the last 35 years were joined by its two former directors and a legendary former county supervisor and legislator who had worked closely with them all. . .

Fabulous, Sassy Smart Indomitable Maureen Dowd Hits On Facebook

Now this is the not-so-kind "news" and political writing your MesaZona blogger really likes - from Maureen Dowd seen in the image to the right snagged from an article yesterday
Will Mark Zuckerberg ‘Like’ This Column?
Maureen Dowd September 23, 2017
WASHINGTON — "The idea of Mark Zuckerberg running for president was always sort of scary.
But now it’s really scary, given what we’ve discovered about the power of his little invention to warp democracy. . ."
Other than the byline image of Ms. Dowd there's this image of the subject of her writing with this caption:
Mark Zuckerberg may be learning what it’s like to be Dr. Frankenstein.
(Credit Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)
Why does she write that, pairing Zuck with the monster Frankenstein created as a fictional character by Mary Shelley? If you haven't read the novel you've surely seen the series of movies.
So let's see where this goes . . .
"ProPublica broke the news that, until it asked about it recently, Facebook had “enabled advertisers to direct their pitches to the news feeds of almost 2,300 people who expressed interest in the topics of ‘Jew hater,’ ‘How to burn jews,’ or, ‘History of “why jews ruin the world.”’”
Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s C.O.O., apologized for this on Wednesday and promised to fix the ad-buying tools, noting, “We never intended or anticipated this functionality being used this way — and that is on us.”
The Times’s Kevin Roose called this Facebook’s “Frankenstein moment,” like when Mary Shelley’s scientist, Victor Frankenstein, says,
"I had been the author of unalterable evils, and I lived in daily fear lest the monster whom I had created should perpetrate some new wickedness.”

What's that all about? ...more than meets the eye [read on]
. . . The Sandberg admission was also game, set and match for Elon Musk, who has been sounding the alarm for years about the danger of Silicon Valley’s creations and A.I. mind children getting out of control and hurting humanity. His pleas for safeguards and regulations have been mocked as “hysterical” and “pretty irresponsible” by Zuckerberg.
Zuckerberg, whose project last year was building a Jarvis-style A.I. butler for his home, likes to paint himself as an optimist and Musk as a doomsday prophet. But Sandberg’s comment shows that Musk is right: The digerati at Facebook and Google are either being naïve or cynical and greedy in thinking that it’s enough just to have a vague code of conduct that says “Don’t be evil,” as Google does. . .
. . . As Bloomberg Businessweek wrote in a cover story a few days ago, Zuckerberg has hired Plouffe, other senior Obama officials and Hillary’s pollster. He has said he is no longer an atheist and he changed Facebook’s charter to allow him to maintain control in the hypothetical event he runs for office.
Yep. Very scary

Signs of The Apocalypse: TRIX

Are the kids, alright?
"They're BACK!": The "Classic" box (AP)
"Silly Rabbit! Original Trix With Artificial Colors Is Back After Customers Revolt: Using radishes and turmeric instead of Red 40 and Yellow 6 didn't work for children and adults alike" Wall Street Journal A-hed by Annie Gasparro:
"General Mills ... started selling all-natural Trix in early 2016 made ... with radishes, purple carrots and turmeric."
The company's "seven reformulated, all-natural cereals boosted sales by 6% ... At the same time, natural-ingredient haters [!] flooded the company with calls, emails and social-media posts."
  • "So ... General Mills has decided to reintroduce the original, more-vibrant Trix, artificial flavorings and all, and will start selling it on supermarket shelves alongside the more wholesome version in October."
  • Why it matters: "The reintroduction of Classic Trix is a reversal of General Mills' pledge two years ago to remove artificial colors and flavors from all its cereal brands."
