From Arizona to Yemen: How Bombs Built by Raytheon in Tucson Killed 31 C...

Published on Dec 17, 2018
https://democracynow.org -
In a historic vote, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution on Thursday calling for an end to U.S. military and financial support for the Saudi-led war on Yemen.
This represents the first time in U.S. history the Senate has voted to withdraw military forces from an unauthorized war using the War Powers Resolution.
The Saudi-led war in Yemen has created what the U.N. calls the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with 14 million of Yemen’s 28 million people on the brink of famine.
A remarkable piece in this week’s New York Times Magazine traces how bombs built by Raytheon in Tucson, Arizona, made its way into the Saudi arsenal and then were dropped on Yemeni villages. The article centers on what happened in the remote village of Arhab when U.S.-backed Saudi warplanes carried out a series of bombings on September 10, 2016. According to Human Rights Watch, at least 31 civilians were killed, three of them children; 42 people were injured. We speak to journalist Jeffrey Stern.

The radical possibilities of man-made DNA | Floyd E. Romesberg

Six-letter DNA with man-made X and Y added to the molecules of life? What's the motivation here - new proteins and protein drugs that are hard to make from amino acids. Synthetic chemists are making new provocative ones, with new amino acids with things attached to them . . . Are U following this?
X and Y are fully-functioning synthetic organisms  . . .

Every cell that's ever lived has been the result of the four-letter genetic alphabet: A, T, C and G -- the basic units of DNA. But now that's changed. In a visionary talk, synthetic biologist Floyd E. Romesberg introduces us to the first living organisms created with six-letter DNA -- the four natural letters plus two new man-made ones, X and Y -- and explores how this breakthrough could challenge our basic understanding of nature's design.

A REVIEW: Mesa City Council Study Session Thu 26 April 2018

Upload on this blog 8 months after this presentation by Candace Cannistraro to justify the sales tax increase for a Proposed Public Safety Tax . . . it was approved by Mesa voters in the November 2018 General Election. In the same General Election - State-wide - Arizona voters approved Proposition 126 by 64.9%.
In a recent Executive Session the City of Mesa is preparing to challenge the language prepared by the Arizona Attorney General for Prop 126 that impacts the collection of new taxes, like those in the so-called "Public Safety Tax" the city wants to use a portion of off to pay-down pension liabilities
___________________________________________________________________________
Note at the opening that Mayor John Giles says they're on TV
1-a. Hear a presentation, discuss, and provide direction on a proposed sales tax initiative for public safety.
Management and Budget Director Candace Cannistraro displayed a PowerPoint presentation. (See Attachment 1)
  • She indicated that a sales tax increase requires approval from the voters.
  • She emphasized that the Public Safety Operational Resources is a conservative estimate to meet the departments challenges in order to be sustainable.
  • She pointed out that the public safety positions would be phased in over 3-6 years. (See Page 7 of Attachment 1)

In response to a question posed by Councilmember Thompson,
Mr. Brady confirmed that a portion of the public safety sales tax could be used towards the unfunded liability on the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System (PSPRS) pensions.

In response to a question from Mayor Giles,
Mr. Brady stated that an annual payment to PSPRS is another option to save on interest.
He noted that other project payments would be affected such as the driving track.
(See Page 7 of Attachment 1)

In response to a question posed by Councilmember Freeman,
Ms. Cannistraro reported that the sales tax rate comparison sheet shows the neighboring valley tax rates and pointed out that the percentages in bold represent rates that are different from the retail sales tax.
(See Page 9 of Attachment 1)

It was the consensus of the Council that the proposed .25% City sales tax increase for public safety be placed on the Council agenda to call an election.

Love & Marriage / Art & Divorce: A Tale From New York City: The Macklowes No More

The Wealth - in art and real estate - gets divided:
O So Messy, huh?

Billionaire's Divorce Ruling
Sparks $700 Million Art Sale

> New York divorce judge orders split of $2 billion in assets
> Developer accumulated one of world’s renowned art collections
New York developer Harry Macklowe and his estranged wife, Linda, were ordered by a divorce judge to split their $2 billion fortune, which means selling “an internationally renowned collection” of modern art from the likes of Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
New York State Supreme Court Justice Laura Drager in Manhattan ruled Thursday that the Macklowe art trove amassed during 59 years of marriage should be sold and the profits shared. In a sign of the acrimony that fueled a prolonged legal dispute, the couple couldn’t agree on what the collection was worth -- Harry’s expert said $788 million, while Linda’s said $625 million. . . .
After a 14-week trial last year, Drager determined in a 65-page opinion how to split all the assets held by the 81-year-old developer and his wife, who is on the board of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The New York Post reported the combined assets were valued at $2 billion.

She’ll get to keep their 14,000-square-foot apartment at the Plaza Hotel valued at $72 million, but have to pay her estranged spouse $36 million for his share. Harry will retain ownership of $82 million in commercial real estate -- including 737 Park Ave. -- but pay Linda $41 million . . . "MORE? Here ya go!         >>        https://www.bloomberg.com/news

The Origin Of Evil: The Devil

Christians needed a  villian
Published on Dec 15, 2018
Where does the devil actually come from? What is the origin of Devil (Satan, Lucifer, etc)?
You might not be religious, but you’ve likely had to deal with a fair bit of Satan in your life. The pesky devil has shown up on the shoulders of cartoon characters, acting as a counterweight to a good decision that appears as an angel on another shoulder. He’s starred in numerous movies, getting into the minds of innocent girls that had to undergo excruciating exorcisms, and he’s been depicted in artform as living in a fiery underworld where wrongdoers spend eternity wishing they hadn’t stolen that everlasting gobstopper when they were just eight years old. On a more serious note, back in the day if you were accused of being in league with this guy you were likely going to suffer greatly. What most of you don’t know is where Satan comes from, so that’s what we’ll discuss in this episode of the Infographics Show, The origin of Satan.
