Arizona's State of Education: How Bad Is It For Attracting Millenials + Workforce Development?

Out of 100 major cities throughout the U.S., the Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale area ranks 48th.
That's a fact and a finding in a new MSN report  just yesterday
Moving Millennials Avoid Phoenix, Despite Population Boom
by Brian Hanna .
PHOENIX, AZ — The Phoenix metro area is topping many lists when it comes to growth but is scraping the bottom when it comes to attracting Millennials, new data from the National Realtors Association shows. Out of 100 major cities throughout the U.S., the Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale area ranks 48th.
The study looked at employment numbers, population counts, income levels and the ability to buy a house.
The top cities included Denver, Colorado, Salt Lake City, Utah and Madison, Wisconsin. So what's deterring this large segment of the U.S.?
Millennials makeup about 25% of the Phoenix-area's population, according to the study, with a median income level of $57,700. For those in that age group who are just moving in, their median paycheck drops to about $46,300. Only about 8% of these newcomers could afford to buy a house here. For Millennials who've been living here for awhile, 18% of them can.
Unemployment among this age group in Phoenix trends higher than the national average, too, with 4.3% without work.
While these economic conditions aren't perfect, some leaders are pointing to Arizona's state of education as a reason the younger generation isn't moving here.
In an interview with KJZZ, the executive director for Achieve60AZ, says the issue is two-fold.
While the state retains about 80% of its universities graduates for the first couple of years, many leave for better options.
"We have somewhat of a flat opportunity here," Rachel Yanof told KJZZ.
Beyond a lack of professional development, for Millennials starting families, options for the kids become more important.
Some point to the lack of public spending on education as a drawback.

Greater Phoenix Economic Council Recipient of Award For Excellence in Economic Development From Site Selection Magazine

Site Selection Magazine's Mac Conway Awards for Excellence in Economic Development recognize the top local and regional economic development agencies in the U.S. for their roles in helping to deliver prosperity to their communities. While not a ranking, objective criteria are used to identify the top performers, which are listed in the website alphabetically by group name.
This year’s Mac Conway Award winners have been determined by an index that examines 2018 corporate facility investment projects in U.S. metro areas as tracked by Site Selection’s proprietary Conway Projects Database, part of the Conway Analytics toolbox.
This announcement is made in the May 2019 edition of Site Selection Magazine, featured on the cover.
Scores are awarded based on six criteria:
  • total projects
  • total investment associated with those projects
  • jobs associated with those projects.
The remaining three criteria represent a per capita calculation of those same metrics.
Here's a company name Word Cloud that accompanies the recognition for GPEC:

Matt Taibbi: The Deep Rot of American Journalism

It's a rare treat to have the opportunity to see-and-hear two straight-talking intelligent and outstanding investigative journalists and authors in one place at one time in one episode of Chris Hedges from his program aired on RTAmerica "On Contact".
For a few yearsMatt Taibbi wrote pieces published in The Village Voice, had a short stint at Glenn Greenwald's The Intercept and wrote a couple of books.
That's all an apologetic understatement to save some time to get at what both are having a conversation about now. The details are in this streaming YouTube upload two days ago.

Here In Mesa There's A Revolt: Rank-and-File Members of Mesa Police Union Challenge The Chief

Imagine that! Next to a faith-based powerful political bloc, the Mesa PD and Mesa Fire/Medical are the biggest and most powerful blocs that can control both politics and government here in the City of Mesa. Both well-organized groups with friends-and-family-connections going back for generations use their influence to avoid public scrutiny any way they can when the issues of openness, transparency and accountability are raised no matter what they say in any number of campaigns that use public relations firms to skim over what's been lurking behind-the-scenes for many years. Here's the latest blow-up self-inflected to deflect the focus on the bigger picture. Closed dominant cultures that want to protect their own self-interest.
_________________________________________________________________________
That's easy-to-say and tough to deal with, but we really have to do more to disrupt these two kinds of cultures that are connected if positive changes to the Political Machine and the way government works here are to move forward.
No matter what the consequences are, we really need to deal with it. It might be disruptive for a time as a cycle of corruption gets exposed and cleared out, but in the end it's all for the public good to hold government here (1) Open, (2) Transparent and (3) Accountable.
It's what works.
In the case of the hiring of Ramon Batista from Tucson, city officials somehow managed to bring in "an outsider" to three internal candidates for the job as Chief. This happened after an incident more than 3 years ago in January 2016 in the case of the killing of Daniel Shaver who was begging for his life when Mesa PD and Officer Phillip Brailsford responded to an incident. It took city officials two years to release the video. . . Shaver's widow and family have a pending lawsuit claim against the City of Mesa for over $100,000,000 - that's a HUGE LIABILITY. . . Once again it's "a war of words" from all three sides
  • Statements from Mesa Mayor John Giles
  • Statements from the Mesa PD Union
  • Statements from  Chief Ramon Batista
All of them are put out there for "Public Relations"

Here's one more new report updated this morning from KTAR 92.3 FM News
Mesa police unions to hold confidence vote on Chief Ramon Batista
By |   UPDATED: May 6, 2019 at 7:24 am
It helps to have a political-insider
 like Attorney Rick Romley
The confidence vote will include input from two Mesa Police Unions including the MPA and Mesa Fraternal Order of Police. On February 22, the association issued a post on Facebook criticizing the way Chief Batista handled two use-of-(excessive) force incidents involving Mesa PD.
What the association called “an epic failure of leadership” led to the assessment and eventual decision to hold a confidence vote.
Batista responded to the news of the MPA assessment and vote in a statement:
(Note how carefully crafted it is. Key phrases and other assertions are underlined or in boldface type to emphasize what the statement wants to say )
“We are aware that a labor organization — working with a marketing firm — has initiated a poll of our officers. It is important to remember that their agenda does not represent the entire Mesa Police Department.
I’m committed to leading this department and I stand by my officers as they carry out their duties to protect and serve this city. The support from our community could not have been made clearer as they passed a public safety sales tax to ensure we have the staffing and equipment to keep them safe.
I’m also very proud that the backing from our city’s elected officials is second to none. Each member continues to show their unwavering support; most recently, Mayor and council attended our Employee Quarterly Awards and helped us honor our Fallen Officers. As a result of several years of incredible work, Mesa is now recognized as one of the safest large cities in America.  Our crime rates are at historic lows.
I am proud to serve the residents of the City of Mesa as the Police Chief, and I am honored to lead the great men and women of the Mesa Police Department, those who work day and night to protect our community, these are the reasons I love my profession.”

It's Hard Digging For The Truth, But Sooner is Better Than Later or Not At All

In the fast-moving world of instantaneous communications we live and work in, Why does all this take all so much time to get at? . . . . and then we wait for the blowback and backfire to deal with it?
BLOGGER NOTE: This might be "digging for the truth" in some of the right places, but we are not getting any closer to clearing out the rot.
Most of the time I can agree with Matt Taibbi when he talked about The Deep Rot of American Journalism, but let's save that 25-minute conversation with Christopher Hayes for another post from On Contact.
An Opinion Piece today 06 May 2019 from John Hightower
Republican Red-Baiting Is Going to Backfire
“Socialism,” snarled Donald Trump at a recent pep rally of far-right Republicans. The obedient crowd of Trumpistas snarled back in unison: So-sh’ll-izz-ummm!
There you have the entire intellectual content of the GOP’s 2020 re-election strategy under Generalissimo Trump: Slap Democrats with a scurrilous campaign branding them as Lenin-Trotsky-Stalin re-incarnate.
It’s not just Trump hissing out the socialist label in a frantic McCarthyesque attempt to make it stick by mindless repetition, but also Republican lawmakers. Unfortunately for them, they’re overplaying a weak hand and bumbling over their own ignorance.
Texas Senator John Cornyn, for example, compared Democrats who support ideas like Medicare-for-All to Mussolini.
Apparently, Cornyn is unaware that the brutish Italian dictator was no socialist, but a fascist. Mussolini’s ideology of ultra-nationalism, masculine authoritarianism, suppression of democratic rights, and rule by wealthy elites is the opposite of the progressive agenda. Indeed, it describes the policies of — guess who? — Trump and his acolytes, including Cornyn! . . .
Far from socialism, this is democratic populism, an honest, popular rebellion against the corporate plutocracy promoted by Trump and Cornyn. Which side are you on?
