From Lee Fang @ The Intercept > FBI Expands Ability to Collect Cellphone Location Data, Monitor Social Media, Recent Contracts Show

"The Federal Bureau of Investigation may be watching what you tweet and where people gather. The federal law enforcement agency’s records show a growing focus on harnessing the latest private sector tools for mass surveillance, including recent contracts with companies that monitor social media posts and collect cellphone location data.
On May 26, as demonstrations around the country erupted over the police killing of George Floyd, the FBI signed an expedited agreement to extend its relationship with Dataminr, a company that monitors social media.
A few days later, the agency modified an agreement it signed in February with Venntel, Inc., a Virginia technology firm that maps and sells the movements of millions of Americans. The company purchases bulk location data and sells it largely to government agencies. . .
The FBI has long pursued advanced technological tools to rapidly predict crime and locate potential suspects, capabilities that have raised concerns that the agency targets lawful forms of protest and free expression. Earlier this year, the agency released a bid proposal for technological solutions toobtain early alerts on ongoing national security and public safety-related events through lawfully collected/acquired social media data.”
The FBI has tapped other notable surveillance firms in recent years, including Palantir, which builds tools to visualize relationships using an array of information, from social media to license plate numbers.

Vive la #Resistance?

The Twitter mob has predictably begun to argue over the virtues and pitfalls of the French Revolution, after Sen. Lindsey Graham suggested that radicals have co-opted the Democratic Party and are marching the nation towards ruin.
Pundits Twitter-duel after Lindsey Graham accuses Democrats of channeling French Revolution
The South Carolina lawmaker triggered a large number of blue checkmarks after accusing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her progressive cohorts of spearheading the most radical mob in recent American history.
“It appears the French Revolution
has now come to the Democratic Party,” the Republican senator tweeted.
But his incendiary warning seemed to galvanize liberal Twitter pundits and media figures.
Dan Saltzstein, a deputy editor at the New York Times, rushed to defend France’s bloody 18th century uprising, claiming that it led to a democratic overthrow of a monarchy and the establishment of a republic.”
The strained analogy received plenty of criticism and mockery.
Saltzstein was raked over the coals for failing to mention that the revolution was followed by
  • the infamous Reign of Terror,
  • a self-declared emperor,
  • more than a decade of war and
  • ultimately the restoration of the monarchy.
The Republican lawmaker isn’t the first one to compare political radicals in the US to French revolutionaries
