Harvard University will divest its $42B endowment from all fossil fuels

University president cites need to decarbonize economy

"Harvard will divest itself from holdings in fossil fuels, the university’s president, Lawrence Bacow, announced late on Thursday.

Harvard Management Company, which oversees the university’s vast endowment of almost $42bn, has already been reducing its financial exposure to fossil fuels and has no direct investments in companies that explore for or develop further reserves of fossil fuels, Bacow said in a message. . .

The university has legacy investments in a number of private equity funds with holdings in the fossil fuel industry. Those indirect investments constitute less than 2% of the endowment, according to Bacow.

The school has not made any new commitments to these limited partnerships since 2019 and has no intention to do so, he added. . .the university had made investments along with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the Engine, a fund that, among other things, “seeks to accelerate the development of technologies that promise to address the challenges posed by climate change”.

The university will also work to achieve “greater transparency in the greenhouse gas footprint of all of our investment managers, along with the development of protocols for assessing and reducing the footprint for entire investment portfolios,” he wrote.

“We must continue to work with our investment managers and with industry if we are to bring about the transformation of our economy that climate change demands,” he added.

> A campus campaign created almost a decade ago called Fossil Fuel Divest Harvard, reacted by saying: “It took conversations and protests, meetings with administration, faculty/alumni votes, mass sit-ins and arrests, historic legal strategies, and storming football fields. But today, we can see proof that activism works, plain and simple.”

Allister Adel: Now What? Still In-Recovery After Emergency Brain Surgery

Hard to say what we know or don't know about the present condition of Maricopa County Prosecutor Allister, Adel. . . some of the details that emerged on election night are definitely murky to say the least. Who could possibly have believed that she was sleeping when the vote tallys were coming in showing that she was trailing her progressive challenger, Democrat Julie Gunnigle?
Early election returns on November 3 showed Adel trailing Gunnigle. Then came the news from Adel's campaign that she had been taken in for emergency brain surgery. The county attorney's office later said her condition stemmed from a fall at home. . .
THE OFFICIAL STORY:
"The accident resulted from a "mundane" fall before the election, said Jennifer Liewer, spokesperson for Adel's office.

"Allister got up in the middle of the night to go to the restroom, tripped on something in the bedroom, and hit her head on a piece of furniture in the dark," Liewer said. Days later, "the bleed progressed and became an emergency situation" on Election Day.

"She's stable," Liewer said. "She's responding ... to the treatment that they're giving her."

Asked if that meant Adel had recovered consciousness since her surgery, Liewer said the family would have to answer medical questions. Liewer said she hasn't talked to Adel since the surgery, but that's not necessarily surprising considering Adel had "major brain surgery six days ago."

Adel Will Remain County Attorney, but Her Condition Is Still Unknown After Accident

Allister Adel's campaign declared victory on Monday in the close race for Maricopa County Attorney, but it remains unclear whether Adel knows about her victory.

The 43-year-old prosecuting attorney, who was appointed to her post in October after the resignation of Bill Montgomery, has not given a public statement since news broke on Election Day that she'd been hospitalized with bleeding in the brain.

"We are humbled and incredibly grateful to the voters of Maricopa County for electing Allister Adel as county attorney," said her campaign spokesperson, Lorna Romero, on Monday afternoon in what the campaign called a "victory statement."

Adel led her Democratic opponent, Julie Gunnigle, 51-49 on Monday, a comfortable 35,000 votes ahead.  Romero didn't immediately return a call seeking comment about Adel.

Fast & Loose Times For Latter-Day Maricopa County >

Maricopa County is growing fast - some say the fastest growing county in the country and Mesa is the fastest-growing city. . . and it looks like the time is here (and way overdue) for one more major scandal the way things are going now when there's so much temptation from all that fast growth
__________________________________________________________________________________
As you can see in "Family-Guy" Maricopa County Assessor Paul D. Petersen's job description in the image above The Assessor notices and administers over 1,7000,000 real and personal property parcels/accounts with FULL CASH VALUE OF MORE THAN $508 Billion in 2018. According to all rosy reports so far for 2019, it is way more than that now - by leaps and bounds and annexing more lands with increasing values.

Since the Feds stepped in last week after the Maricopa County Sheriff turned over Petersen into their custody, Board of Supervisor Chairman Bill Gates has unilaterally called for AN INTERNAL AUDIT.
An audit of the Assessor’s Office, which he said may be completed in a matter of days.
“We have a fiduciary responsibility as the board of supervisors to the taxpayers of Maricopa County, to all 4.5 million residents in Maricopa County,”
Gates said.
_________________________________________________
OK if that's the case, DO AN INDEPENDENT THIRD-PARTY AUDIT
. . .A questionable INTERNAL AUDIT that can get completed in just 'a matter of days' ???
TO INVESTIGATIVE THEMSELVES???
Whoa!
Hold on ---- Gates goes on:
“And so, given the situation the assessor is in right now, it’s important we understand all of our options as a board to make sure that those taxpayers can continue to be protected and provided the customer service that they’re entitled to from Maricopa County.”

To that end, the board is working with new Maricopa County Attorney Allister Adel to determine if Petersen, who hasn’t resigned, would be struck from his elected office.
BLOGGER COMMENT: now that's another story to add to all these fast times in Maricopa County for sure! Just how good can all this get!

> Accusations are flying-off in all directions to cast a wider net to see who else is getting caught-up and ensnared in one more Arizona scandal that's getting very familiar and very closely-connected to corruption in Maricopa County that usually flies under-the-radar of public scrutiny until circumstances say otherwise. . .

Petersen’s attorney lobs ethics claim at County Attorney as he prepares for hearing on suspension
"As suspended County Assessor Paul Petersen fends for his job in a hearing Wednesday, his attorney has leveled conflict-of-interest allegations against Maricopa County Attorney Allister Adel similar to what led to the downfall of her predecessor Andy Thomas.
Attorney Kory Langhofer accused Adel in a Nov. 11 letter of acting adversely against Petersen by advising the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors how to remove him from office while she also represents him in a tax-court matter.
“Direct adversity against a concurrent client is per se unethical,” Langhofer said in the letter
Langhofer compared Adel’s handling of the suspension to Thomas’ attempts to pursue false criminal charges against county supervisors, judges and other political foes, a charge for which he was subsequently disbarred.
In response to the accusation, Jennifer Liewer, a spokeswoman for Adel, said the letter was sent “to create a distraction to the issues at hand” and deferred any other comments to the letter written back to Langhofer.
Adel’s attorney Lynda Shely responded in a Nov. 26 letter that called Langhofer’s claim “misplaced.”
Langhofer argued that Adel is being unethical because the county attorney (and the office) have represented Petersen in other matters and is also now working “to remove him from office.” He noted that the entire five-member board called for Petersen to resign long before any investigation had taken place or evidence had been presented, and argued Adel should have recused herself from the case. . ."

". . . In a closed-door executive session that lasted for more than an hour on Monday, the supervisors discussed legal issues with Maricopa County Attorney Allister Adel and Tom Liddy, who heads up the office’s civil division.
Supervisor Bill Gates, the board’s chairman, said the supervisors are still seeking additional information from the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office on whether it has the power to remove Petersen.
“We’re receiving legal advice on that, and we have additional questions as it relates to that. And we look forward to hearing back from the county attorney soon,” Gates said.
Gates said the board has also instructed the county’s auditor, Mike McGee, to determine whether Petersen used any public resources as part of his adoption business or the dozens of crimes with which he’s been charged. Fields Mosley, a spokesman for the county, said the board has no indication that county funds were used or mingled with Petersen’s business, but that it ordered the audit out of an abundance of caution...

Mesa's Budget Data + Finances: City Departments Are Eating Each Others Dog Food

It's that time of the year again for the Mesa City Council to hear presentations, discuss and provide direction in a series of public hearings for the annual end of the fiscal year June 30th. Several audits have been done this past year, with more being scheduled. The new Proposed Budget Reviews for next year FY2019/2010 started weeks ago in public hearing in front of the Mesa City Council - where not too many members of the public bother to take the time to get informed about. Budgets are complex and complicated. Unless you are a financial analysis, you might not question the data presented or how the accounting is done to "balance-the-books". These public city department proposed budget hearings will continue until probably May 31st.
Why should you care?

Because it is a "Shake-Down"
Sooner or later most all the monies that are funding sources for what the City spends come right out-of-your-pockets.
(There is a dis-proportionate share of that allocated to District 6 if you don't know that already.)

6 ___________________________________________________________________________

The Office of Management and Budget's (OMB) mission is to ensure the effective and efficient use of resources in order to sustain the delivery of quality services for the residents of Mesa.
The Office of Management and Budget develops and manages the annual operating budget and the five-year capital improvement program. It forecasts city-wide revenues, expenditures and fund balances; conducts special projects; and administers the City's performance excellence, which provides process improvement, performance management and strategic planning services to city organizations.
