Japan’s prime minister, Fumio Kishida, has removed ministers associated with the Unification church in a cabinet reshuffle aimed at reviving his fortunes amid a public outcry over his party’s ties to the religious movement.

The reshuffle comes just over a month after the murder of Shinzo Abe by a man who has said he targeted the former prime minister over his links to the church, which he blamed for his family’s financial ruin.

Re-Unification in The New Era: China Releases a White Paper

Direct from the source with a link that leaves no doubts - it is very clear

China releases white paper on Taiwan question, reunification in new era

Xinhua | Updated: 2022-08-10 10:10

Full Text: The Taiwan Question and China's Reunification in the New Era

BEIJING -- The Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council and the State Council Information Office of the People's Republic of China published a white paper titled "The Taiwan Question and China's Reunification in the New Era" on Wednesday.

The white paper was released to reiterate the fact that Taiwan is part of China, to demonstrate the resolve of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Chinese people and their commitment to national reunification, and to emphasize the position and policies of the CPC and the Chinese government in the new era.

Taiwan has belonged to China since ancient times. This statement has a sound basis in history and jurisprudence, according to the white paper.

The UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 is a political document encapsulating the one-China principle whose legal authority leaves no room for doubt and has been acknowledged worldwide, says the white paper.

The one-China principle represents the universal consensus of the international community; it is consistent with the basic norms of international relations, says the white paper.

"We are one China, and Taiwan is part of China. This is an indisputable fact supported by history and the law. Taiwan has never been a state; its status as part of China is unalterable," says the white paper.

The CPC is committed to the historic mission of resolving the Taiwan question and realizing China's complete reunification. Under its resolute leadership, people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits have worked together to de-escalate tension across the Straits. They have set out on a path of peaceful development and made many breakthroughs in improving cross-Straits relations, according to the white paper.

Under the guidance of the CPC, great progress has been made in cross-Straits relations over the past seven decades, especially since the estrangement between the two sides was ended. Increased exchanges, broader cooperation and closer interactions have brought tangible benefits to people across the Straits, especially of Taiwan. This fully demonstrates that cross-Straits amity and cooperation are mutually beneficial, says the white paper.

"The realization of complete national reunification is driven by the history and culture of the Chinese nation and determined by the momentum towards and circumstances surrounding our national rejuvenation. Never before have we been so close to, confident in, and capable of achieving the goal of national rejuvenation. The same is true when it comes to our goal of complete national reunification," says the white paper.

China's development and progress -- in particular, the great achievements over four decades of reform, opening up and modernization -- have had a profound impact on the historical process of resolving the Taiwan question and realizing complete national reunification, according to the white paper.

The actions of the Democratic Progressive Party authorities have resulted in tension in cross-Straits relations, endangering peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits, and undermining the prospects and restricting the space for peaceful reunification. These are obstacles that must be removed in advancing the process of peaceful reunification, says the white paper.

External forces have encouraged and instigated provocative actions by the separatist forces; these have intensified cross-Straits tension and confrontation, and undermined peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region. This runs counter to the underlying global trends of peace, development and win-win cooperation, and goes against the wishes of the international community and the aspiration of all peoples, says the white paper.

Relying on external forces will achieve nothing for Taiwan's separatists, and using Taiwan to contain China is doomed to fail. The wheel of history rolls on towards national reunification, and it will not be stopped by any individual or any force, says the white paper.

Peaceful reunification and "one country, two systems" are our basic principles for resolving the Taiwan question and the best approach to realizing national reunification. Embodying the Chinese wisdom -- we thrive by embracing each other -- they take full account of Taiwan's realities and are conducive to long-term stability in Taiwan after reunification, according to the white paper.

"To realize peaceful reunification, we must acknowledge that the mainland and Taiwan have their own distinct social systems and ideologies. The 'one country, two systems' principle is the most inclusive solution to this problem. It is an approach that is grounded in democratic principles, demonstrates good will, seeks peaceful resolution of the Taiwan question, and delivers mutual benefit. The differences in social system are neither an obstacle to reunification nor a justification for secessionism," says the white paper.

"We are ready to create vast space for peaceful reunification; but we will leave no room for separatist activities in any form," it says.

"We will work with the greatest sincerity and exert our utmost efforts to achieve peaceful reunification. But we will not renounce the use of force, and we reserve the option of taking all necessary measures. This is to guard against external interference and all separatist activities. In no way does it target our fellow Chinese in Taiwan. Use of force would be the last resort taken under compelling circumstances," it adds.

The future of Taiwan lies in China's reunification, and the wellbeing of the people in Taiwan hinges on the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. "We will join hands with our fellow Chinese in Taiwan to strive for national reunification and rejuvenation," says the white paper.

Once peaceful reunification is achieved under "one country, two systems," it will lay new foundations for China to make further progress and achieve national rejuvenation. At the same time, it will create huge opportunities for social and economic development in Taiwan and bring tangible benefits to the people of Taiwan, it says.

Peaceful cross-Straits reunification is of benefit not only to the Chinese nation, but to all peoples and the international community as a whole, says the white paper.

Spokesperson makes remarks on white paper on Taiwan question and China's reunification in new era

A spokesperson for the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee on Wednesday made remarks on a newly published white paper titled "The Taiwan Question and China's Reunification in the New Era."

XinhuaUpdated:  August 10, 2022

A spokesperson for the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee on Wednesday made remarks on a newly published white paper titled "The Taiwan Question and China's Reunification in the New Era."

The white paper was released by the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council and the State Council Information Office.

In August 1993 and February 2000, the Chinese government published two previous white papers on Taiwan. These two white papers provided a comprehensive and systematic elaboration of the basic principles and policies regarding the resolution of the Taiwan question, said the spokesperson.

As China's national rejuvenation has become a historical inevitability, we now have better conditions, more confidence, and greater capabilities to achieve national reunification. As China embarked on a new journey to build a modern socialist country in all respects, it is necessary to issue a new white paper on national reunification, said the spokesperson.

The white paper was released to reiterate the fact that Taiwan is part of China, to demonstrate the resolve of the CPC and the Chinese people and their commitment to national reunification, and to emphasize the position and policies of the CPC and the Chinese government in the new era, the spokesperson said.

Summarizing the main contents of the white paper, the spokesperson said it cited a large number of facts in history and jurisprudence to show the indisputable and unalterable fact that Taiwan is part of China.

The white paper gave a comprehensive summary of the CPC's resolute efforts, major achievements and precious experience in promoting China's complete reunification.

The white paper gave a systematic elaboration on the CPC and the Chinese government's principles and policies in advancing national reunification in the new era, and portrayed the bright prospects after the peaceful reunification is achieved under "one country, two systems."

The white paper also demonstrated our strong confidence towards complete national reunification, our resolute determination in fighting against separatist forces seeking "Taiwan independence" and external interference, as well as our original aspiration in safeguarding the well-being of people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits, said the spokesperson.

Under the current complex international and cross-Straits situation, the release of the white paper is conducive to exposing the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces' collusion with external forces in making provocations, as well as their vicious words and deeds that attempt to undermine China's sovereignty and territorial integrity or stand in the way of its reunification, the spokesperson said.

The white paper conveyed the CPC and the Chinese government's willingness to continue to work with the greatest sincerity and utmost efforts to achieve peaceful reunification and win over the understanding and support of compatriots on both sides of the Straits, especially Taiwan compatriots, and the international community, said the spokesperson, adding that the white paper will help pool strength to advance national reunification.

Peaceful cross-Straits reunification is of benefit not only to the Chinese nation, but to all peoples and the international community as a whole. We hope Taiwan compatriots will stand on the right side of history, be proud of their Chinese identity, and fully consider the position and role of Taiwan in China's rejuvenation. We hope they will pursue the greater good of the nation, resolutely oppose separatism and any form of external interference, and make a positive contribution to the just cause of China's peaceful reunification, said the spokesperson.

The spokesperson expressed the hope that Hong Kong and Macao compatriots and overseas Chinese will remain committed and further contribute to the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations and China's peaceful reunification.

The spokesperson also expressed the hope that the international community and all countries that have established diplomatic ties with China will abide by the one-China principle, properly handle Taiwan-related issues, develop better understanding and give more support to the Chinese people for their just cause of opposing "Taiwan independence" separatist activities and striving for national reunification.

CURRENT EVENTS:

The Importance of Pelosi and Taiwan on Bond Swings

Bonds, Bears, the Fed and Nancy Pelosi

A bear market in bonds has been a long time coming — it’s about four decades since the last one ended. And after the US saw inflation hit its highest levels in 40 years (since the bond bull market started), fueling bets that the Federal Reserve would embark on the most aggressive tightening campaign in a generation, it seemed that the bear market had finally started.

But cold feet remain. Yields have dropped precipitously in recent weeks, despite the lack of any clarity that inflation is over. And that led to an extraordinary trading session Tuesday as they boomeranged back upward. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi can claim a starring role with her fraught visit to Taiwan. Barring only the two worst days of the first Covid shutdown, and the Monday in June when the Fed leaked its intention to hike by 75 basis points at its next meeting, this was the biggest daily gain for 10-year yields in five years

How has this happened? Over the last 40 years, whenever the trend appeared to be about to break, the Fed would respond with cheaper money and bring yields back down again. Its emergency response to the pandemic helped rates to drop to record lows in 2020. With the return of inflation, that pattern appeared to have broken, leading to this year’s surge in yields. But since June, it has been as though the market trod on a rake. Ten-year yields dropped by a full percentage point:

At present, the Bloomberg Global Aggregate Index, which tracks total returns from investment-grade government and corporate bonds, has slumped roughly 12% since the beginning of the year — a significant move for an asset that is prized for its stability. The broader ramifications are severe, as bonds have not played their usual diversifying role in contrast to equities, raising doubts on the endurance of the classic “60/40.” According to Bloomberg’s index, a 60/40 portfolio in the US would have lost 19% for the year until bonds’ June turn.

How do we explain that pivot? Evercore ISI’s Ed Hyman, who started the year expecting 10-year yields to reach into a range between 4% and 5%, offers this handy checklist of all the events of the last seven months that have given investors an incentive to buy bonds once more. They are in roughly descending order of importance — profound for the Ukraine invasion, more ambiguous for other developments1. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine2. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan3. Likelihood of getting financial shock or crisis4. Plunge in M2 growth, the broadest measure of money supply5. Various signs inflation is cooling6. Weakness in housing market7. Economy in recession8. Disaster in Europe9. Middle East risk10. Climate change

Chinese hackers use new Windows malware to backdoor govt, defense orgs

An extensive series of attacks detected in January used new Windows malware to backdoor government entities and organizations in the defense industry from several countries in Eastern Europe.

Kaspersky linked the campaign with a Chinese APT group tracked as TA428, known for its information theft and espionage focus and attacking organizations in Asia and Eastern Europe [1234].

The threat actors successfully compromised the networks of dozens of targets, sometimes even taking control of their entire IT infrastructure by hijacking systems used to manage security solutions.

"The attack targeted industrial plants, design bureaus and research institutes, government agencies, ministries and departments in several East European countries (Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine), as well as Afghanistan," Kaspersky ICS CERT researchers said.

"An analysis of information obtained while investigating the incidents indicates that cyberespionage was the goal of this series of attacks."

New backdoor deployed for cyberespionage

To achieve their goal, the Chinese cyberspies used spear phishing emails containing confidential information about the targeted organizations and malicious code exploiting the CVE-2017-11882 Microsoft Office vulnerability to deploy PortDoor malware.

PortDoor was also used in spear phishing attacks coordinated by Chinese-backed hackers in April 2021 to hack into the systems of a defense contractor that designs submarines for the Russian Navy.

In the following stages of the attack, the group installed additional malware linked to TA428 in the past (i.e., nccTrojan, Logtu, Cotx, and DNSep), as well as a never before seen malware strain named CotSam.

Like the other families used in this campaign, the new backdoor allows the attackers to collect and steal system information and files from compromised systems.

To deliver CotSam, the attackers went as far as to include a vulnerable version of Microsoft Word together with the payload (Microsoft Word 2007 on 32-bit systems and Microsoft Word 2010 on 64-bit systems).

Stolen data forwarded to Chinese server

After moving laterally through their victims' enterprise networks using tools capable of network scanning, vulnerability search and exploitation, and password attacks like the Ladon hacking utility (popular among Chinese threat actors), they gained domain privileges and harvested confidential files.

Next, they sent them to command-and-control (C2) servers from different countries as encrypted and password-protected ZIP archives.

However, all this stolen data was forwarded by the C2 servers to a second-stage server with a Chinese IP address.

Evidence connecting this campaign to TA428 includes significant overlaps in tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) with the group's previous activity, the same exploit for delivering the initial malware payload used in other attacks against Russian targets, malicious tools commonly used by Chinese threat actors, and dozens of connections to infected systems during Chinese business hours.

Furthermore, the researchers also identified malware and C2 servers previously used in attacks linked by other vendors to this Chinese APT group.

"We believe that the attack series we have identified is an extension of known campaign described in the research of Cybereason, DrWeb, and NTTSecurity," Kaspersky added.

"This is supported by numerous facts and a large amount of evidence we have identified, from the choice of victims to matching CnC servers."
