World leaders arrived at the Great Hall of the People, which faces Tiananmen Square in Beijing, Sunday, for the opening ceremony of the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRF).

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan welcomed their guests before the forum's opening banquet.

Xi Jinping gave a speech at the banquet, saying that the forum is the evolution of the Silk Road as it represents "the continuity of an historical trend and the correct choice for future."

The Chinese President added that he believes that if countries "meet each other halfway," by developing international cooperation, then "greatness [will be] shared."

The Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRF) is set to continue in Beijing, China on Monday, May 15.

The two-day forum is expected to bring together heads of state and government, entrepreneurs, representatives of financial institutions and international organisations. During the forum participants are expected to address problems facing the global and regional economy and discuss international cooperation.

SOT, Xi Jinping, Chinese President (Mandarin): "2000 years ago, our ancestors cherished the plain wish for friendly diplomacy. Thus, they opened up the Silk Road and started a communicative era in human history. Today, we inherited the spirit of the Silk Road, [and] negotiated the building of the 'Belt and Road'. [This] is the continuity of an historical trend and the correct choice for future."

SOT, Xi Jinping, Chinese President (Mandarin): "We are on the way, filled with hope. I believe if we meet each other halfway, linking our hearts together, never retreat, never stop, we will witness a situation of connected roads, where greatness [will be] shared. I believe our cause will be like the Silk Road, which [is] best-known and accessible to future generations."
