Pentagon overcounts value of military aid to Ukraine by $6.2bn

The US overestimated the value of weapons it sent to Ukraine by $6.2bn, an accounting error that means the US has more funding available to aid Kyiv’s counteroffensive.

The Pentagon had previously said it overvalued the weapons by at least $3bn but updated that figure on Tuesday after further review.

Final calculations show that there was an error of $3.6bn in fiscal year 2023 and $2.6bn in fiscal year 2022, which ended September 30.

Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said the US would use the funds in future aid packages for Ukraine. Washington has committed some $34bn in assistance to Ukraine since Russia invaded in 2022.
