Zelensky demands more ‘pressure’ on Moscow
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has called for more pressure on Moscow, following a phone call with US President Joe Biden. According to the Ukrainian leader, additional deliveries of heavy weapons featured in their conversation.
“We discussed the course of hostilities and the processes taking place in Russia,” Zelensky said on Sunday evening. “The world must put pressure on Russia until international order is restored.”

The White House released a short statement, confirming Biden had “reaffirmed unwavering U.S. support, including through continued security, economic, and humanitarian aid.”
The conversation took place two weeks before the upcoming NATO summit in Lithuania, where members of the US-led bloc will focus on further aid for Kiev. Zelensky discusses Russian turmoil with Biden, Trudeau, Duda
Zelensky and his defence minister said they held a series of calls with Kyiv's allies to discuss the "weakness" of Putin and Ukraine's next counteroffensive steps
"Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his defense minister said they held a series of calls with Kyiv's allies on Sunday to discuss the "weakness" of Russia's President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine's next counteroffensive steps.
The phone calls took place after an extraordinary failed mutiny by the head of Russia's Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, that raised questions about Putin's grip on power as Ukraine presses a counteroffensive in its south and east.
"We discussed the course of hostilities and the processes taking place in Russia. The world must put pressure on Russia until international order is restored," Zelensky said after a phone call with US President Joe Biden.
- According to the White House readout, the two leaders "discussed Ukraine's ongoing counteroffensive, and President Biden reaffirmed unwavering US support."
Oleksii Reznikov, Ukraine's defence minister, said he and US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin discussed Ukraine's counteroffensive and next steps to strengthen the forces.
"Things are moving in the right direction," Reznikov wrote on Twitter.
Ukraine Crisis: Amid revolt in Russia, Biden-Zelensky discuss latest event, announce to continue support
President Biden highlighted unwavering US support, which includes continuous security, financial, and humanitarian assistance, as the two leaders spoke about Ukraine’s military counteroffensive.
“President Biden spoke today with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine to discuss support for Ukraine as it defends itself against Russian aggression. They discussed Ukraine’s ongoing counter-offensive, and President Biden reaffirmed unwavering US support, including through continued security, economic, and humanitarian aid. The leaders also discussed recent events in Russia,” the White House readout of President Joe Biden’s Call with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine said.
Earlier on Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that everyone who chooses the path of evil “destroys” himself, as he took a sharp dig at Moscow hours after the Wagner group launched a rebellion against Russian military facilities.
Taking to Twitter, Zelenskyy said, “Everyone who chooses the path of evil destroys himself. Who sends columns of troops to destroy the lives of another country and cannot stop them from fleeing and betraying when life resists. Who terrorizes with missiles, and when they are shot down, humiliates himself to receive Shahed drones. Who despises people and throws hundreds of thousands into the war, in order to eventually barricade himself in the Moscow region from those whom he himself armed”.
Accusing Russia of using propaganda to mask its weakness, the Ukrainian President said that this attack by Wagner group exposes Russia’s full-scale weakness.
“For a long time, Russia used propaganda to mask its weakness and the stupidity of its government and now there is so much chaos that no lie can hide it. And all this is one person, who again and again scares by the year 1917, although he is able to result in nothing else but this,” he said... '

Ukraine offensive makes slow gains, Zelensky says; Putin sees 'lull'
"Some people believe this is a Hollywood movie and expect results now. It's not," Britain's BBC quoted Zelensky as saying in an interview
- While Ukraine's officials said the Russia chaos works to Kyiv's advantage, it yet remains to be seen whether Zelensky and his army can capitalise on the Moscow disorder to reclaim territories now occupied by Russia.
Serhiy Cherevatyi, spokesperson for Ukraine's eastern military command, said on Sunday Kyiv's army advanced 600 metres (2,000 ft) to 1,000 metres over the previous day near Bakhmut, a city taken by Wagner forces in May after months of fighting.
- But the gains have been incremental so far, with Zelensky saying recently the counteroffensive has been "slower than desired."
- expanding defense cooperation with an emphasis on long-range weapons,
- coordination ahead of the NATO summit in Vilnius next month and
- preparations for a "Global Peace Summit" he has promoted.
"Yesterday's events exposed the weakness of Putin's regime," Zelensky was quoted in the statement.
- Separately, Zelensky said he had told Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a call about the "threatening situation" at Ukraine's vast, Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
Zelensky warned earlier this week that Russia was considering carrying out an act of "terrorism" involving the release of radiation at the plant, an allegation denied by Russia.
"Ukraine's partners must demonstrate a principled response, in particular at the NATO Summit in Vilnius," he said.
- The Ukrainian leader made similar comments in a statement announcing a phone call with Polish President Andrzej Duda."
Biden and Zelensky Discuss ‘Recent Events in Russia’
President Joe Biden spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday after a tumultuous weekend in Russia.
“We discussed the course of hostilities and the processes taking place in Russia,” Zelensky said in a tweet. “The world must put pressure on Russia until international order is restored.”
- Zelensky added that he thanked Biden for the “unflagging support” of Ukraine amid its ongoing war against Vladimir Putin’s Russia.
- Part of that support, Zelensky said, was the support of the fighter jet coalition to “protect our skies.”
“We discussed further expansion of defense cooperation, with an emphasis on long-range weapons,” he said.
In addition to reaffirming “unwavering U.S. support” for Ukraine, the White House said that Biden and Zelenskyy discussed “recent events” that transpired in Russia.
Over the weekend, the mercenary Wagner Group—led by former Putin ally Yevgeny Prigozhin—attempted to stage an insurrection after Prigozhin accused the Russian military of firing on his men. The group claimed to take control of key military sites in Russia, with Prigozhin promising a “march of justice” in Moscow.
But Prigozhin pulled back his forces by Saturday night, striking a deal to leave Russia in exchange for the Kremlin dropping any criminal charges against him for the attempted coup.
- After his conversation with Biden, Zelenskyy said in his tweet that he was thankful that the United States would “stand side by side with Ukraine until the full liberation of all our territories within internationally recognized borders.”
