Christian Freuding heads the Ukraine Special Staff in the Ministry of Defense. In conversation with WELT AM SONNTAG, he dampens expectations of Kiev's rapid success. But he sees a decisive advantage of Ukraine – because of a German weapon.
WORLD ON SUNDAY: So far, only a small part of the Ukrainian brigades have been working for this offensive, but the first problems are emerging. Russia is clearly superior, especially in the air.
  • Was it a failure of the western supporter states to send Ukraine this summer without modern fighter jets and with too few anti-aircraft systems?
Freuding: This is the perfide of the Russian strategy: they continue to attack the population centers to force the Ukrainians to concentrate their air defense and anti-aircraft defense around the cities.
  • But what would be needed on the offensive would be accompanying air defense – and it will not be available to the extent necessary. Ukraine does not get out of this dilemma. At every meeting of the partners in the so-called Ramstein format, the Ukrainians formulate three priorities: air defense, air defense, air defense. . ."

Details: According to the publication, Germany has already transferred 34 Gepard systems to Ukraine, and another 15 will be delivered in the coming weeks.

Quote: "In addition, we want to deliver up to 30 more Gepard systems by the end of the year in cooperation with the United States," Freuding said.

In an interview with Welt am Sonntag, the Bundeswehr brigadier general said that he considers air defence a key weak point in the current counteroffensive of the Ukrainian army.

"We're doing everything we can. But despite all this, does Ukraine have sufficient missile defence? Definitely not!" Freuding said.

He also recalled that by the end of 2023 Germany will provide Ukraine with two more IRIS-T SLM anti-aircraft missile systems, which have "almost 100 percent accuracy," and four more next year.

Earlier it was revealed that the American company Global Military Products had been awarded a contract from the Pentagon for more than USD $118 million for the purchase and supply of Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft systems for Ukraine.

Army to acquire radar-equipped air-defense guns for Ukraine to repel attacks by unmanned aerial vehicles

June 20, 2023

NEWARK, N.J. – U.S. Army air-defense experts needed mobile air-defense guns to help protect warfighters and military equipment from air attacks. They found their solution from weapons distributor Global Military Products Inc. in Tampa, Fla.

Officials of the Army Contracting Command-New Jersey in Newark, N.J., announced a $118.4 million contract to Global Military Products late last month for Gepard 35-millimeter air defense systems.

The Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft gun (SPAAG), manfactured by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) in Munich, is based on the chassis of the German Leopard 1 main battle tank. It has twin Oerlikon GDF 35-millimeter belt-fed guns that fire 550 rounds per minute.

The system carries 640 armor-piercing-incendiary rounds for use against air targets and 40 armor-piercing rounds for use against ground targets. These systems most likely are for the Ukraine armed forces in their war against Russia, where the systems reportedly have proven effective against unmanned aircraft.

The air-defense system has a general-search radar at the rear of its turret roof and tracking radar between the guns. It has an identification friend-or-foe (IFF) system.

The air-defense vehicle's radar of the Gepard has a range of 9.3 miles, and provides all-round scanning with simultaneous target tracking, with search-on-the-move capability.

On this contract Global Military Products should be finished by May 2024. For more information contact Global Military Products online at www.globalmilitaryproducts.com, or the Army Contracting Command-New Jersey at https://acc.army.mil/contractingcenters/acc-nj/
