Peter M. Fish Exhibition: Portraits of the Natural World | Pomfret, CT

In 2000, we opened the Center at Pomfret, adjacent to the 700-acre Bafflin Sanctuary, with its extensive grasslands habitats. This sanctuary was designated an Important Bird Area in 2004.

The Connecticut Audubon Society protects Connecticut’s birds, other wildlife, and their habitats through conservation, education, and advocacy.

We envision that our efforts will lead to a future where all can share and experience the joys of nature and understand the importance of environmental preservation.

Peter M. Fish: Photography Exhibition and Sale

Peter M. Fish (1953-2025), originally from Mansfield, CT, was a gifted photographer, known for his prize-winning images of the birds, wildlife, and landscapes of southern New England’s coastal lowlands and woods.
His passion for the avian world shines through in every photograph from dynamic action shots to quiet, evocative portraits.
Celebrate his work at the free opening reception on Sunday, April 19, from noon to 4 pm.
  • His bird photographs include dazzling action shots as well as sensitive, evocative portraits.
  • Peter, also a skilled woodworker, constructed all of the frames for his photos.
  • He printed, matted, and framed his work himself, using archival quality pigment inks and conservation quality acid-free materials.

About The Center at Pomfret

Wildlife

BirdsOver 200 species of birds have been recorded on the Bafflin Sanctuary! The preserve has diverse habitats which attract many bird species. Grassland and early successional species of birds are our specialty. Our grassland species include Eastern Meadowlark, Bobolink, Savannah Sparrow, and American Kestrel. On occasion, Sedge Wren has nested.  The early successional species include Brown Thrasher, Blue-winged Warbler, White-eyed Vireo, Indigo Bunting, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Common Yellow throat, Yellow Warbler, Orchard Oriole, and Eastern Towhee. Aerial insectivores are plentiful and include Tree Swallow, Barn Swallow, some Rough-winged Swallow, and a very large colony of Purple Martin.  Raptors include Red-tailed Hawk, American Kestrel, Red-shouldered Hawk, Cooper’s Hawk, Northern Harrier, and Bald Eagle. We plant several wildlife food plots that attract migratory birds in the late summer and fall.

Other Wildlife

Just about any mammal species that can be expected in Connecticut uses the Bafflin preserve at some point during the year.  They include bobcat, coyote, mink, beaver, otter, weasel, white-tailed deer, several bat species, black bear, raccoon, opossum, eastern cottontail, meadow vole, shrew, and mouse.  The bobcat population has increased over the years, and they are observed regularly.  As with most wildlife, actually observing most species is by chance.
