CONSPIRACY FEVER
The Daily Beast - “It's a stunt,” I say more than once to my colleague, who was on the floor beside me. “It's a stunt.”

There is no evidence
that the shooting at the 2026 White House Correspondents' Dinner (WHCD)
was staged. Authorities and media outlets have identified the suspect
as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from California, who was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives.
Law
enforcement officials confirmed that Allen sent anti-Trump writings to
his family before rushing the event. Despite this, several "staged"
conspiracy theories have circulated online, fueled by a lack of trust in
institutions and the rapid spread of misinformation on social media.
Debunked Claims of "Staging"
The
following claims have been widely shared as "evidence" of staging, but
each has been refuted by eyewitnesses or documented facts:
- Karoline Leavitt's "Shots Fired" Comment: Before the dinner, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said "there will be some shots fired tonight in the room". This was a metaphorical reference to President Trump’s planned jokes for his speech, but it was later used by online theorists as "proof" of prior knowledge.
- The "Secret Signal": Viral videos showed a man holding up a card just before shots were fired. The man was actually Oz Pearlman, a mentalist scheduled to perform at the dinner; he was in the middle of a magic trick for the Trumps and Leavitt when the commotion began. . .
