It is a conflict Democrats have criticized as costly and unauthorized by Congress. During a House Armed Services Committee hearing on the administration’s 2027 military budget proposal,

Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman Dan Caine are expected to push for increased spending on drones, missile defense systems and warships as part of a proposed $1.5 trillion defense budget.

The department’s acting Chief Financial Officer Jules W. Hurst III said most of the cost stemmed from munitions spending. He added that the agency will soon submit a formal supplemental budget request to Congress via the White House once "we have a full assessment of the cost of the conflict."

Under law, US President Donald Trump needs Congressional approval to continue war, experts say, but Congress may avoid the issue altogether. .

The US has spent approximately $25 billion so far on the Iran war, a senior Pentagon official told lawmakers on Capitol Hill on Wednesday.
Pentagon acting comptroller Jules Hurst made the comments during a hearing with the House Armed Services Committee (HASC). The joint US-Israeli war on Iran, dubbed Operation Epic Fury, commenced on Feb. 28.
“Most of that is in munitions… A part of that’s obviously O&M [Operations and Maintenance] and equipment replacement,” Hurst said during the hearing to discuss the Pentagon’s budget request for fiscal year 2027.
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine and Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth were also present.
