Strong mag. 5.4 Earthquake - North Atlantic Ocean, 84 km south of Lissabon, Lisboa, Portugal, on Monday, Aug 26, 2024, at 04:11 am (GMT +0) - 7 days ago
A strong magnitude 5.4 earthquake occurred in the North Atlantic Ocean near the coast of Portugal in the early morning of Monday, Aug 26, 2024 at 4.11 am local time (GMT +0). The quake had a very shallow depth of 17.5 km (11 mi) and was felt over a large region. The shallow depth of the quake caused it to be felt more strongly near the epicenter than a deeper quake of similar magnitude would.
No significant damage or impact is expected from this quake and no particular alert was issued.
26 Aug 04:16: Now using data updates from GFZ
26 Aug 05:14: Hypocenter depth recalculated from 10.7 to 17.5 km (from 6.6 to 10.9 mi). Epicenter location corrected by 6.9 km (4.3 mi) towards ENE.
Significant earthquake of magnitude 5.4 just reported 79 km southwest of Lissabon, Portugal
The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by Spain's Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN), which listed it as a magnitude 6.2 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Sines Municipality (pop. 12,800) located 52 km from the epicenter, and Sesimbra (pop. 41,100) 53 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Corroios (pop. 52,500) located 70 km from the epicenter, Amora (pop. 52,600) 71 km away, Barreiro (pop. 51,300) 76 km away, Lissabon (pop. 517,800) 79 km away, Queluz (pop. 103,400) 80 km away, Amadora (pop. 178,900) 80 km away, Cacém (pop. 94,000) 81 km away, and Algueirão (pop. 66,300) 83 km away.
