Von der Leyen: I will appoint a special commissioner for the countries of the Western Balkans
The President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, in her speech during the Bled Strategic Forum, announced that the European Commission will appoint a commissioner dedicated to the integration of the Western Balkan countries.
Full word:
A year ago, we presented the new growth plan for the Western Balkans. The work has given the first results. Tirana is the fastest growing airport in Europe. European companies are settling in Serbia and Bosnia at a rapid pace. Kosovo, its economic reforms have been praised by the IMF and are bringing economic benefits. Investments and infrastructure in RMV are a source of inspiration. Montenegro has just experienced a credit rating increase. By the end of the year, three of you can become part of the common payment space. It would lead to savings of over 500 million euros every year. It has not been a year since we formulated this objective and it is already a result that is showing us and you should be proud.
Reforms are related to investments. Each reform will unlock new investments. When all reforms are completed, each will receive as much aid per person as BP would receive under EU cohesion policy.
It is such an important step because the EU is in the process of reinventing itself in the new geopolitical context and they want BP to be active. The extension should be a full-time job that allows for undivided attention. I will appoint a commissioner dedicated to integration.
