A Milestone Here In Mesa: Kiana Maria Sears Gets Some National Attention

Your MesaZona blogger just happened to bump into this woman, who's now running for one of two statewide seats on the Arizona Corporate Commission, two years again when she was gathering signatures in the Free Speech Zone front of the Mesa Public Library,to get elected to the Mesa School Board. She succeeded to be the first African-American elected to the governing board of the state's largest school district.
That was an impressive achievement in a city and state where the demographics are changing.
You can see by the image above that Kiana is 'a person of color', bright and ebullient with an engaging smile. According to this report yesterday from CBS News , she hopes that her statewide candidacy can inspire others to run for office, regardless of their background.
One of her top priorities is helping to ensure Arizona increases its renewable energy portfolio, citing higher rates of asthma among African-American children. The commission regulates electric utilities, water companies, railroad safety and securities
