The Shame-Sham: SITE REVIEW Mesa Planning & Zoning Board Meeting Wed 25 Sept 2019

This Zoning Case in this place: it's supposed to be "Mesa City Center" - the center of finance, culture, entertainment and government.
Doesn't look like it's made they grade for any of that for a very long time. The high-visibility site next to the ugly architecture of City is definitely not the image that's right for the Downtown Area

Like we all know by now, The Devil is Always in The Details.............Readers of this blog can see the latest episode of city officials trying to turn our public spaces and public spaces into a satellite of the ASU campus in Tempe where it's devoured downtown and turned the streets into party-time for drunk and rowdy students.
Now any plans the city might have are turning into a
"360-Degree Dilemma"

The Rise of Downtown Mesa’s Innovation District – A New Urban Model
Leveraging Downtown’s key assets to recreate the heart of the City.
"Innovation Districts, as defined by Washington DC think tank the Brookings Institution, “are geographic areas where leading-edge anchor institutions and companies cluster and connect with start-ups, business incubators, and accelerators. They are also physically compact, transit-accessible, and technically-wired, and offer mixed-use housing, office, and retail.”
Innovation districts bring together a diverse population looking for better places to live, work, and play, driving an eclectic mix of housing, jobs, and amenities in a walkable community.
A recent Brookings’ study found that Downtown Mesa is well positioned with many of the key attributes in place or in various stages of development that are key in building a robust innovation district.
Arts, Culture, Entertainment
Downtown is an appealing arts district that patrons of all ages can enjoy – day or night. The Mesa Arts Center (MAC) is a unique, architecturally stunning, international award-winning facility located in the heart of Downtown Mesa, and is Arizona’s largest arts center, with four theaters, five art galleries, and 14 art studios. More than 450,000 people visit the MAC every year.
Downtown Mesa is home to many additional museums, galleries, restaurants, music venues, entertainment attractions, and Arizona’s premier emerging artist festival, the Mesa Music Festival, which attracts musicians and industry experts from around the world.
A Destination for Higher Education
Downtown Mesa is an epicenter for public and private college experiences, and home to Mesa Community College’s Downtown Campus, Benedictine University, and the forthcoming ASU @ Mesa City Center.
In 2013, Benedictine University invested in Downtown by opening a new campus on Main Street. Today, the university hosts more than 500 students and has expanded to classroom and lab space at Mesa’s Center for Higher Education.
ASU @ Mesa City Center, will bring no less than 40 faculty and 750 students to the campus within five years. Additional phases could bring further buildings and many more students.

Recently, Mesa’s City Council approved a plan to fund the design and construction of a 115,000-square-foot building for Arizona State University (ASU) in Downtown Mesa. The campus, dubbed
ASU, selected as the nation’s most innovative school by U.S. News and World Report, will bring new programs focused on technology, entrepreneurship, and innovation. In those programs, students will explore virtual reality, advanced data visualization, 3D animation, and more. ASU @ Mesa City Center will serve as an important anchor for Downtown Mesa’s innovation district and will help further drive private investment.
